REAL PS 4 1. Research A) What types of research and sources did the speaker use to develop the speech? The sources she used were almost all research studies B) Was the research sufficiently balanced on each side of the topic? Yes; she provided a variety of pros AND cons in her video. C) What organizational pattern (point or block—See Unit IV, Course Guide for descriptions) does the speaker use to present the information? Was this the most effective organizational pattern in order to present each side in an equal, unbiased way? She uses block organization. You can process the pros and then process the cons in an equal number and decide which ones you should walk away with from both groups making it equal and unbiased. 1. Ethics A) Is the speaker credible to speak on the topic? How is credibility established and/or proven throughout the presentation? Please provide a specific example. She introduces herself as Dr. Majd in the beginning of the video and states how she will be talking medical topics. Her credibility on the topic is that she has her doctorate. B) Are both sides of the argument presented ethically? Did the speaker come off as biased towards either side of the topic? Explain your answer. The speaker shows pros and cons that she both believes in and does not show facts that are biased. 1. Analysis A) Who are stakeholder groups within her general audience? What context or situation might this information be presented? Caffeine consumers. This information can be presented by nutritionists and dietitians. B) Is the information and speaking style appropriate for the audience and context? How could this be tailored for the audience/context specified in your response to Part A? The information is given clearly and with language that is not hard to understand. She tailors it by giving tips on how to improve your health. C) Noting that this was a YouTube video, were the visual aids effective? Would a PowerPoint have been a helpful addition to the speech? Why or why not? List one suggestion that could improve the visual aspect of this speech. The visual aids write key points that she is saying that makes the information easier to consume. Therefore, a powerpoint was not necessary because she provides the key points on the screen. She can improve visual aids by providing pictures as an added visual. 1. Language/Listening
A) How well did the speaker cite research, define technical terms, and explain complex ideas? Please comment on at least 2 of these ideas. She does a good job at defining the difficult medical terms that are used in her video, for example at the beginning she defines carcinogen as a cancer-causing agent. She also cites research from the American Cancer Society showing credibility. B) Did the speaker use persuasive language? Please give an example of why or why not. What effect does the use of persuasive language have on the purpose of this speech or her credibility as a speaker? The speaker provided no persuasive language when listing the pros and cons however did sound persuasive while giving tips on staying healthy. Her persuasive language was used in a way that still held credibility because as a doctor she was giving tips on improving her health. C) When assessing the vocal and physical delivery of this speech, what would be one strength and one suggestion you would offer the speaker? Her strength is using vocal variety while speaking but a suggestion I would give is more hand gestures.
