Abstract
This paper explores the use of nonverbal codes in managing personal identity and relates it to the course material from "Nonverbal Communication: An Applied Approach” by Jonathan Bowman. In this discussion, an in-depth analysis will be conducted on different nonverbal communication strategies used in identity management and how they align with the concepts presented in the reading.

Introduction
Nonverbal communication plays a pivotal role in shaping people’s identity and how they present themselves to the world. This reflection aims to analyze these nonverbal codes used in managing identity and connect the practices to the course material from the provided course material. Among the common principles include body language, clothing and appearance, eye contact, paralanguage, and proxemics.
One of the common nonverbal codes used to manage identity is body language. Bowman (2021) underscores the significance of body language as a form of nonverbal communication in his book. For instance, he mentions that posture, gestures, and facial expressions carry a wealth of information regarding individuals' intentions and emotions. In my case, I usually use confident
and open body language when I want to appear approachable and self-assured. Also, I consciously avoid crossing my arms to present a positive and confident image.
On the other hand, the way people dress and groom themselves is another nonverbal code
for managing identity. According to Bowman (2021), appearance and clothing are significant elements of nonverbal communication. I take this element very seriously and ensure I align my clothing choices with my desired identity. For instance, I guarantee to dress professionally when I want to convey reliability and competence at work. Besides, I opt for casual attire when I want to appear relaxed and friendly. This practice aligns with Bowman's emphasis on the role of clothing in identity construction.
In addition, maintaining appropriate eye contact is another code most people use to manage their identity during conversations. The significance of this element is highlighted in the reading, indicating that it helps to present engagement and interest (Bowman, 2021). In my case, I ensure to make an effort to maintain eye contact during conversations to signal attentiveness

and sincerity. This example aligns with the emphasis in the course material about the role of eye contact in promoting interpersonal communication.
Bowman (2021) presents that paralanguage, a concept that involves variations in pitch, tone, and speed of speech, is another nonverbal code. I often employ this code by modulating my
voice intentionally to portray different aspects of my identity. For example, I speak assertively and confidently in professional settings, while I adopt a warmer and more empathetic tone in my personal conversations. This helps me to connect with people easily.
Lastly, the concept of proxemics is also considered as code for nonverbal communication. This concept is concerned with personal space and distance during communication (Bowman, 2021). As an individual, I am mindful of this notion in different contexts. For example, I maintain a comfortable distance during casual conversations with friends but increase the distance in unfamiliar or formal settings to respect personal boundaries. This helps me set boundaries with people while maintaining good relations with them. Conclusion To summarize, nonverbal communication is a powerful tool for managing personal identity. This analysis has highlighted how different codes can be used to deliver a message, including body language, clothing, eye contact, paralanguage, and proxemics. Notably, these codes play a significant role in conveying and shaping identity. A reflection on how I employ these codes in my daily activities is provided, and my practices align with the concepts presented
in the reading material. In general, I would advise people to consider these elements when communicating because they are important in our daily interactions.
