Planning for the Persuasive Speech with Analysis
Speech Topic
:
Importance of Therapy
Rhetorical Purpose:
To persuade my audience to understand and appreciate the importance
of therapy.
Audience Analysis:
(Refer to chapters on
Audience Analysis &
Persuasive Speaking)
Ignorance is bliss. That is what most people say. However, I want to
inform you not to be ignorant of therapy because talk therapy has been
effective in addressing most psychiatric issues that affect many
individuals. I will affirm that talk therapy is better than medication.
Persuasive claims:
(refer to chapter on
Persuasive Speaking)
“Talk therapy is a way for people to work through stressing situations
by talking them out with a professional expert.”
Organizational
Pattern:
(refer to chapters on
Organizing Your
Speech & Persuasive
Speaking)
I intend to use a problem-cause solution pattern. This is because there
is a need to identify the lack of seeking therapeutic help as a problem.
Mental illness is a current issue affecting most people, seeing as most
people associate therapy with mental health illness. As a solution,
there is a need for behavior change by shifting the narrative deeply
rooted in peoples’ minds about talk therapy and allowing people to
appreciate the benefits accrued to a person seeking talk therapy.
Message/
Methods of
Persuasion:
(refer to chapter on
Methods of Persuasion)
My method of persuasion will be about past evidence and reasoning
provided by the various website article authors.
Types of Supporting
Materials:
(refer to chapter on
Supporting Materials)
I will use scholarly and peer-reviewed articles that provide statistics on
the success of talk therapy. Also, I will employ videos of interviews
conducted in the past.
Types of Research
Sources:
(review “Background
Information” for the
Speech Research
Activity)
Secondary data will be the main source of data collection because I
will use past written website articles to support my main ideas and
thesis statement.

Persuasive Speech “Formal Outline”
Introduction
Write in complete sentences. Refer to chapter on Outlining Your Speech.
I.
Attention Getter:
Most of us grew under the impression that personal (internal)
matters must remain confidential. However, holding onto your
emotional struggles and physiological issues is detrimental to your
mental health. Medication (using antidepressants) alone cannot
cure a patient as it only helps in stabilizing and limiting the
progression of symptoms. Talk therapy became an effective
alternative to medication since it addresses the root cause of a
problem. I found relief from problems lodged deep into my
subconscious self that impaired my life constantly. I have had
traumatic experiences and my previous doctor overmedicated me,
resulting in the development of depression, forcing me to stop
taking drugs. Such are stories of the experiences of patients who
agree that medication does not suffice.
II.
Thesis Statement:
Open and trusting communication between a therapist and client is
an effective medicine compared to medication as client share their
traumatizing events and work with the therapist to identify
psychotic areas that prevent their healing from traumatic events.
III.
Connection with
Audience:
Over the past years, most people have suffered from depression,
anxiety, and traumatic psychological experiences that have pushed
some people to their death. For this reason, various health
departments have encouraged all people to seek talk therapy to
ease and talk about stressing problematic issues that need the
attention of more than one person. Although nothing in life is
always true for every person, therapy has helped many people in
many circumstances.
IV.
Speaker’s
Credibility:
The speaker is a Mental Health psychologist and a candidate at the
New York University Medical Center.
V.
Preview of Main
Points:
Talk therapy sessions are effective as it not only addresses the
source of the issues but the symptoms as well.

Persuasive Speech “Formal Outline” (contd.)
Body
Write in complete sentences.
Important:
Include evidence and reasoning and other persuasive
appeals in sub-points (refer to the source in each sub-point by paraphrasing, quoting, or
summarizing with a citation following APA format – 6
th
edition), and insert transitions between
main points. Refer to chapters on Researching Your Speech, Outlining Your Speech, and
Persuasive Speaking, & Methods of Persuasion.
I.
Main Point One:
Talk therapies address both the symptoms and source of the problem.
Sub-point A:
(w/source
citation, if
applicable)
Over the past centuries, there have been assumptions about therapists
worldwide (James,2019). Usually, therapists have been identified with
the imagery of a person wearing eyes glasses sitting on a chair, taking
notes and occasionally nodding in response to a patient disclosing
their problems to them. However, there is more to that than what
meets the eye.
Sub-point B:
(w/source
citation, if
applicable)
Talk therapy is a practice that allows patients to explore their problems
and feelings and talk about them. Usually, when a person expresses
their feelings, they allow themselves a vulnerability among them and
their therapist that allows the uncovering of a path that leads to healing
Sub-point C:
(w/source
citation, if
applicable)
It is worth noting that group therapies and individual therapies are the
same. Both therapy sessions allow the expression of thoughts and
ideas freely to the therapist or other individuals in the case of group
therapy (James,2019). Group therapies and individual therapies
embrace the significance of speaking one’s feelings and emotions.
Transition:
In as much as people have been skeptical about the importance of
therapy sessions, researchers suggest that every person should
consider giving a therapy class a chance, even if at least once in their
lifetime.
II.
Main Point Two:
Talk therapy has done more good than harm.
Sub-point A:
(w/source
citation, if
applicable)
In the years-long, people with mental health illnesses were treated
using medication to stabilize the mind and other outcome symptoms
(Lindenberg,2020). However, talk therapy has even made things easier
because people now are given a platform to vent out problems causing
them stress
Sub-point B:
(w/source
citation, if
applicable)
Additionally, talking things out with a therapist enables someone to
find relief quickly compared to being medicated. According to
research, people who receive talk therapy sessions are less likely to
attempt suicide.
Sub-point C:
(w/source
citation, if
applicable)
Furthermore, research suggests that therapeutic effects are long-lasting
(Gallagher,2020). Therefore, the tools provided during therapy
sessions enable a person to work through similar occurrences if they
occur again in the future. This reasoning suggests that even after a
person ends talk therapy, the mind works in marvelous ways to use a
reflective lens in talking about, thinking about, and expressing
emotions and feelings or our internal issues even after a relapse.
Transition:
Other than that, talk therapy allows people to relate with each other
easily.

III.
Main Point
Three:
Talk therapy enables a better understanding of oneself and other
people.
Sub-point A:
(w/source
citation, if
applicable)
Having talked with therapists allows people to develop a new
perspective on life and appreciate other peoples’ lives. Before a person
starts seeing a therapist, they hold in negative thoughts, and if these
thoughts are not spoken out, they become deep-rooted such that we
start seeing the world through that lens (Walton,2014). If this prolongs
for years, we may start assuming things to be true when they are not
true.
Sub-point B:
(w/source
citation, if
applicable)
Besides, talking out emotions and feelings allows the healing process
to start. Although it may be difficult to start disclosing personal
information to strangers, experts suggest that the road to healing
begins with the first step, in this case, talk.
Sub-point C:
(w/source
citation, if
applicable)
However, it is important to note that the possibility of an individual
opening up to a stranger is zero to none. For this reason, therapists
should create a platform where a person will feel comfortable and
open and therefore encourage the process.
Transition:
Therapy sessions are important to people seeing as they stabilize their
minds and enable them to relate well to others.

Persuasive Speech “Formal Outline”
Conclusion
Write in complete sentences. Refer to chapter on Outlining Your Speech.
I.
Summary of Main
Points:
We are all bound to encounter small or big problems in our
everyday lives, However, knowing how to deal with these conflicts
is an essential skill. Since such skills are not taught in schools or
institutions, people must realize therapy enables healing by dealing
with mental health illnesses as and when they occur. When people
talk about their stressing problematic issues, they lift the burden
from their subconscious and allow room for growth, development,
and appreciation of life.
II.
Clincher:
That being said, I think it is impartial that everyone should
schedule a therapy session regardless of whether they have a
mental illness or not.
Reference List
