1. What are the three themes of intimacy, strengths and diversity.
2. What is marriage (male and female)? What is same sex marriage? Pros and Cons of any and all marriages.
3. There are a lot of trends with being married, but there are bigger trends with living together. What are some pros and cons to living together.
Pros:
Trial Period:
Cohabitation allows couples to experience daily life and routines together, getting a realistic sense of compatibility before marriage.
Financial Benefits:
Sharing living expenses can provide significant financial relief and increased stability.
Deeper Understanding:
Living together fosters a deeper understanding of a partner's habits, lifestyle, and communication style.
Greater Intimacy:
Sharing a living space can strengthen the emotional bond between partners.
Cons:
Societal/Family Pressure:
Some couples may face judgment or pressure to marry based on traditional expectations.
Loss of Independence:
Cohabitation may mean compromises regarding personal space, decision-making, and habits.
Potential for Complacency:
The ease of cohabitation might make some couples less likely to pursue marriage if that's their ultimate goal.
Less Legal Protection:
Cohabitating couples generally have fewer legal protections and rights compared to married couples, especially concerning property distribution or inheritance if the relationship ends.
4. What is divorce and why does it seem that people are so quick to call it quits.
A divorce is a legal action between married people to terminate their marriage relationship. It can
be referred to as dissolution of marriage and is basically, the legal action that ends the marriage before the death of either spouse (Meyer, 2017). Divorces can occur for a myriad of reasons including personal differences, infidelity, financial strains, and many other individual or mutual issues. Many people are quick to call it quits in marriage due to several factors. Unrealistic expectations often lead to disappointment as the ideal scenarios many hope for in marriage are not always achievable. Additionally, marrying for the wrong reasons, such as social pressure or financial benefits, can result in incompatible partnerships that do not withstand the test of time. Marriage itself is inherently challenging, and without a solid understanding of its complexities, individuals may struggle to manage the ups and downs of a shared life. Furthermore, a lack of essential relationship skills like communication, conflict resolution, and mutual respect can leave
conflicts unresolved and weaken the bond between partners, making divorce seem like the only
viable option. These elements combined make some individuals view divorce as an easier or more immediate solution to marital dissatisfaction. (Olson, 2021).
5. When is it a good time to start a family?
There's no single "perfect" time to start a family, as the decision is deeply personal. However, some factors contribute to it being a good time. Financial stability, while not needing to be wealth, is important as children are expensive. Emotional maturity in yourself and your partner is
essential, as parenthood brings immense change and requires patience and resilience. Additionally, a strong support system, whether family, friends, or community, makes the journey
less overwhelming. Ultimately, when you and your partner feel ready to dedicate yourselves to the profound rewards and responsibilities of raising a child, that could be a good time to consider
starting a family.
6. What if your spouse becomes abusive or does drugs?
7. Discuss Money
8. In-laws and the family network.
Chapter 3
1. Looking at the family as a whole, how do families try to "do it all."? This meaning, work, family, parents, in-laws.
2. When starting a family, how will religion play a part?
When starting a family, religion can play a significant role in shaping foundational values and daily practices. Shared religious beliefs among couples contribute to a stronger, more unified relationship, enhancing communication, conflict resolution, and emotional intimacy. This is supported by studies, such as the one by Larson & Olson, which found that couples with high agreement on spiritual beliefs experienced happier and more robust marriages.
In family life, religious practices provide structured activities like worship services and community gatherings, offering stability and regular opportunities for family bonding. Additionally, these activities connect the family to a broader community that can offer support during times of need. Religion also guides the moral and ethical education of children, influencing how parents impart values such as kindness and generosity, thus serving as a guiding
compass through the complexities of life.
(Olson, 2021).
3. Current verbiage is "balance". Can this be done? Is this a form of control? Discuss balanced, midrange and unbalanced families.
The concept of "balance" in family dynamics focuses on achieving a healthy interaction and adaptability within families. Balanced families maintain an equilibrium that supports both individual growth and connectedness among members. Midrange families exhibit extremes in one dimension (like cohesion) but balance in another (like flexibility), managing functionality despite challenges. Unbalanced families, characterized by extremes in both dimensions, often face dysfunction, either feeling too constrained or too detached. (Olson, 2021).
