Affairs often occur in relationships that are not as fulfilling or as committed as they once were. What are some of the problems that prevent partners from discussing the state of their relationship in an honest and constructive way?
2.
What individual differences might make people more or less likely to pursue and affect
their success in CNM relationships?
3.
Why do you think people in open relationships report poorer relationship outcomes than swingers and people in polyamorous relationships?
Answers:
1.
Couples tend to cheat b
ecause it is easier than having those difficult conversations with their partner. Many individuals have a fear of conflict which can lead them to cheat instead of confronting their partner. individuals might resort to cheating as a way to seek fulfillment or validation outside the relationship when their emotional or physical needs aren't being met within it. Communication within a partnership can also be impacted by underlying issues such as insecurity, low self-esteem, or unresolved conflicts from past relationships.
2.
Individual differences such as personality traits, attachment style, communication skills, and sexual orientation can lead to an individual’s likelihood to pursue a CNM relationship.
3.
Open relationships often involve less structured boundaries and communication compared to swingers and polyamorous relationships. For example swingers usually engage in sexual activity with others as a couple. Open relationships may lack clear boundaries or guidelines, leading to misunderstandings, conflicts, and insecurity. Polyamorous relationships emphasize the development of emotional connections with multiple partners, while swingers focus primarily on sexual interactions within established boundaries. In contrast, open relationships may prioritize sexual exploration without necessarily fostering deep emotional connections with others which can lead individuals to feeling neglected or insecure in their primary relationship. The main factor, however, is jealousy and insecurity. The main difference is that polyamorous relationships and swingers are either participating in sexual activity with their partner or their forming emotional connections with multiple individuals together forming a relationship with more than 1 person.
