When I think of leadership, I think of someone that inspires or motivates people to see the bigger
picture. Leaders should be able to paint a picture of what could be. Leaders should have imagination. They should make the impossible seem possible.
True leaders know how to challenge their followers to reflect on their current state and to chase after more. Of course, there are always going to be leaders that will abuse their powers, but in the
right hands, many positive changes can be made. For whatever reason, it was normal for me to be put in leadership roles at a young age, and I was often seen as a leader by my peers. This was part of my personality even before I had endured any hardship, trauma, and heartache in life. I believe these types of experiences can either make you or break you, depending on personality, environment, genetics, etc. In my experience, they made me stronger, and made me a fighter. I had several hardships happen between early adolescence and the beginning of adulthood that gave me a sense of wisdom and maturity that most teenagers/young adults did not possess. These experiences made me want to help others in similar situations, which has inspired me to not only take on leadership roles but pursue a degree and a career field that relates to helping others too. I think openness/transparency and constructive feedback are the most important aspects of communication for leaders. Being able to provide constructive feedback to team members and also encourage them to give feedback to each other and to you as a leader, helps everyone to feel included and informed, and allows everyone to work together to achieve a common goal. I also think recognizing and rewarding team members for their contributions is important when it comes to inspiring motivation. This could be in the form of verbal praise, awards, or incentives.
Emotional intelligence is a critical component of effective leadership. When it comes to EI, I always choose empathy as being the most important aspect of it. Being able to understand the perspectives and feelings of ALL parties involved can really help leaders mediate effectively and find solutions that satisfy everyone. From empathy comes conflict resolution, which one could argue is the most valuable skill when it comes to leadership. Being able to resolve conflict in my
opinion, is one of the essential skills needed for any leadership role, and one of the main benefits to having emotional intelligence. Since I touched on emotional intelligence already, I will choose ethics or social justice in terms of connecting leadership to one of the programmatic themes. Fairness is another vital aspect of being a leader, which can relate to both ethics and social justice. Though it’s something I feel a lot of modern-day leaders lack due to narcissism, when it comes to genuinely memorable leaders,
a lot of histories greatest leaders had an aptitude for seeking justice, and equality for all, regardless of their personal experiences. Being an advocate for those who are marginalized or mistreated is something we all want to see in modern day leaders.
