Identify Giovanni’s elements of identity. Discuss the overall degree of automatic power tied to these identities
. For automatic power, Giovanni appears to have automatic power because they are seen on a platform addressing social issues in the country and among those who fall into the categories of minority groups. However, this is somewhat deceptive because as soon as
Giovanni begins talking about the struggles that they and other folks face, it is quickly realized that they do not have automatic power. The stage or platform on which they speak puts them in the public eye but it does not erase the challenges they face in every day life. Giovanni is Black, LGBTQ and an Immigrant. They list Black, Hispanic, East Indian, Gay and Gender Queer, Immigrant from Jamaica has part of his identity. They do not identify each identity as more important than they other. Identify at least three culturally-linked experiences, beliefs, or values that emerge in Giovanni’s story.
These may be the Client’s own cultural meanings or may be those within the client’s environment. Use textbook readings to support your connections. He is not valued as a black man in the Portland area. Discrimination is dealt based on race, economic status, gender status, sexual identity, disabilities, immigration or HIV status. There was abuse in Jamaica due to their LGBTQ identity. There is homophobia among people of
color. There is also still racism seen in the LGBTQ community today. For Giovanni, he faces discrimination in race, their sexuality and their gender expression are the main places where they experience discrimination. They experience discrimination homophobia and transphobia from other people of color and racism among white LGBTQ people and white society as a whole.
One of the areas Giovanni really stresses is working with the LGBTQ youth and providing a safer
world for them to live in. The discrimination within the communities where solace should be found. Meaning, racism within the LGBTQ community and discrimination among people of color.
For each of the three culturally-linked experiences, beliefs or values, state how could you broach understanding of Giovanni’s culturally linked experiences (e.g., just write out what you would say if this came up in a counseling session). Giovanni’s experiences can summed up as, discrimination among the communities that they are
supposed to find support in, the bullying commited by those who felt they had no right to adopt those identities, and finally the support that eventually showed up in their lives. That support coming from various people within Giovanni’s community as well as their grandmother and eventually their mother. For his experiences he talks about involving discrimination and identities, I might broach the subject by saying, “I recognize I am a white CISgender heterosexual woman and I wonder how that feels for you?”
Another way I might broach a subject is “Protecting the LGBTQ youth is really important to you.”
The third one would be, “I hear your concern for your safety. How might I honor what that might look like, in here?” Use a model identity to develop or acculturation to conceptualize the client’s experience. Use
textbook readings to support your connections
. In looking at the model Gay and Lesbian Sexual Identity Development Models (table 2.4) I would say that Giovanni is at stage 6 Identity and Full self-integration. Another one is the Multiracial Identity Development Models and I would say they would fall under Stage 5 as Giovanni started over their talk with seeming to be affiliated more with one racial heritage (being black) and then later listing Middle Eastern and Hispanic as the rest of them. Digging further in the book, I found the topic of Assimilation which
would speak to the immigrant part of his story. Assimilation talking about the adoption of cultural norms within the country and Giovanni talked about trying to take on the identity of a heterosexual man to hide who they were. They speak to this when talking about trying to play football. Identify client strengths, elements in the environment that function as supports, and elements in the environment that function as stressors. Strengths of the client is their resilience. The stressors of their environment including moving countries, gender based bullying back in Jamaica, family shutting them out, mental health challenges coming from depression, anxiety and PTSD. There is the discrimination they face from those who would be considered to be in similar minority groups. For example, they face discrimination from people of color for being part of the LGBTQ community as well as racism within the LGBTQ community. Supports, though, are the group of men they met when coming over here, the support from the community center just down the street, their grandma and later mother. The reason resilient is the language I picked to be the client’s strength, is because encompasses so much of their journey. Despite the hardships, they still persevered to end up in
a position to motivate others to be part the change that needs to happen. I hear them when they say that the battle is far from over, for establishing equality and a safe space for everyone.
Identify Elle’s elements of identity. Discuss the overall degree of automatic power tied to these identities
. Born and raised outside Cleveland Ohio. She is a black female. Automatic
power could be seen in her education opportunities with her getting into Honors Society and with her going and completing college. She had the resources to be able to connect to the authors she found solace with. But on the reverse, automatic power really was found in the way the schools were divided, the freedom each campus got, the support Elle did not receive but the white students did. Identify at least three culturally-linked experiences, beliefs, or values that emerge from Elle’s story. These may be the client’s own cultural meanings or may be those within the client’s environment. The schools were separated into smaller schools where the white kids got separated from the blacks. The white kids had more of a different kind of freedom than the black kids did and Elle felt as if they were being herded like cattle. She expresses the feeling like just because she’s black, she wasn’t seen as good enough to other people. For example, when she got into college she was told by another white person that she only got in because she was Black. The separation of schools made Elle feel like she wasn’t as smart as the white kids. She found connection through literature along with her voice. Talks about intersectionism between Blackness and womanhood. Found in places of achievements. Didn’t feel like she fit in. For each of the three culturally-linked experiences, beliefs or values, state how could you broach understanding of Elle’s culturally linked experiences (e.g., just write out what you would say if this came up in a counseling session). “I recognize that I am white. How does that influence the power dynamics that you feel in this room?”
“White people make you feel invisible.”
“Literature connects you in a way that’s important to you.” Use a model identity to develop or acculturation to conceptualize the client’s experience. Use
textbook readings to support your connections. You could use Phinney’s model to help with conceptualization of the client’s experience. Given what I know in the video, Ethnic Identity Search was taking place as she began to read books of literature. Whe Elle talks about her education experience, the Lack of Exploration could show up in that she was basing her intelligence and her success based on what other people were thinking of her level of intelligence and worth once she got accepted into college. By the end of

the video, we see that she has achieved ethnic identity within what we know of where she is at in her journey so far. Identify client strengths, elements in the environment that function as supports, and elements in the environment that function as stressors. The environment that supported to her seems to be her mom and then the connection she found through the literature that connected her to others who experienced the same reality she did or at least similar. The elements that functioned as stressors was the entire education system when it failed her. Perseverance is her greatest strength. Despite the challenges she faced, she still succeeded at what she set out to accomplish.
