Module A3: Binary Solutions In this module, we will look at the thermodynamics of solution containing two components. By the end of the module, you will develop the skills needed to interpret free energy diagrams. We will first start with ideal solutions and move on to the more complex models. When two components are mixed together, there is a free energy change associated with mixing. [1.21] is the heat absorbed or released during mixing and is the difference in entropy between mixed and unmixed state. For ideal solutions, the free energy change on mixing is only due to change in configurational entropy. [1.22, 1.26] For regular solution, and heat can be absorbed or generated during mixing. In this case, is only due to the bond energies between adjacent atoms. [1.36] [1.38] Suggested reading from the Porter and Easterling: Section 1.3, except 1.3.3, 1.3.5
