Module B5: Steady State and Non-Steady State Diffusion In Module B1, we have derived Fick’s First Law, which states that flux of atoms is proportional to the concentration gradient. It is represented by the following equation: Where J is diffusion flux, D is diffusion coefficient, and is concentration gradient. Fick’s First Law only applies for steady state diffusion, that is concentration at every point does not change with time. In reality, steady-state conditions are not usually reached and the concentration varies with both time and distance. This can be represented by Fick’s Second Law, which relates that rate of concentration change with time to the change in concentration gradient: To solve this partial differential equation, we will need to define the boundary conditions in order to determine the solution. In the lecture, we will learn specific solutions to Fick’s Second Law. Suggested Reading: Porter and Easterling, Section 2.2.3, 2.2.4, 2.2.5
