CH 324 QUANTIATITVE AND INSTRUMENTAL ANALYSIS SAFETY QUIZ – TEST 1 Safety in the Analytical Laboratory: Open Book Quiz, Test #1 Hung Nguyen - 934333226 1) If you are not doing any experimental work but are sitting at a lab bench doing calculations, why should you be wearing eye protection? -> Because other experiments are running and there is a chance things may go wrong and hurt me. 2) If your instructor is not wearing safety goggles, why should you? -> Because my instructor made the rules, so he is above the rule. Joke aside, I follow the safety rules, I will make sure my instructor following the rules too. 3) If you are told to mix 2 g of solid sodium peroxide with 20 mL of water, do you a) put the 2 g of sodium peroxide in a beaker and pour the water into it; or b) put the water in the beaker into the beaker and then add the sodium peroxide or c) does it matter? -> Water in first because it is liquid and if there is no chemical in it yet, the splashing will not be damaging. 4) The discoverer of nitrous oxide (N 2 O) found that breathing it produced a light-headed dizziness, and thus it became known as “laughing gas.” Which safety rules did he violate? -> No ventilation or gas mask was used 5) Ordinary household sugar is sometimes used as a chemical reagent. Why should a bottle of such sugar not be taken to a nearby area to sweeten coffee? -> because it was opened in a lab environment where contaminated with other chemicals. The instrument for chemistry experiments that was used to scoop the sugar out is usually not cleaned properly for food safety so I would rather not risking it. 6) If a reagent runs down the side of your glassware, why should you wash it off before continuing? -> I might forget about it later and accidentally touch the glassware with my bare hand and it will hurt. 7) Where is there an eyewash fountain? How is it used? -> In the same lab in certain areas. Push the handle and it will squirt upward. 8) If you get sodium hydroxide on your hands, what should you do? -> Take off contaminated clothing and shoes immediately.Wash affected area with soap and water.Seek medical attention if irritation, discomfort persist . 9) Which of the following items are clothing are normally unacceptable in the laboratory? a) Cotton shirt b) Nylon stockings c) Swimsuits d) Scarf e) Shoes that expose toes f) Sandals 10) If you fail to check out of your locker when dropping the course, what is the penalty? -> $45
CH 324 QUANTIATITVE AND INSTRUMENTAL ANALYSIS SAFETY QUIZ – TEST 1 11) What is an essential requirement of a laboratory notebook a) spiral binding, b) permanent binding c) numbered pages d) all pages unused? 12) When assembling or disassembling a burette, what should you use to help protect you from being cut if the burette breaks? -> Grasp the burette close to one end and gently squeeze the nose in 13) How do you dispose of acid and base waste? -> Neutralize first before dumping into designated container or the sink 14) Briefly describe the chemical accident in Bhopal India. -> The chemical accident in Bhopal, India, occurred on December 2-3, 1984, at a Union Carbide pesticide plant. It resulted from a toxic gas leak, mainly methyl isocyanate (MIC), due to safety issues and maintenance problems. The disaster exposed over half a million people to toxic fumes, causing thousands of immediate deaths and long-term health issues. It is one of the worst industrial accidents in history, with a death toll estimated between 15,000 and 20,000 people. The incident highlighted the importance of industrial safety and corporate responsibility. 15) What year did it happen? -> 1984 16) How many people died (immediately)? -> Not known 17) What is a reasonable estimate for how many totals deaths occurred in the first year after the accident? -> 8,000 to 10,000 18) Which is greater; the number of people killed at Bhopal or the number of people killed in all of the nuclear power accidents in the history of the nuclear industry? -> The total number of fatalities from all nuclear accidents combined is significantly less than the number of deaths in the Bhopal gas disaster. 19) Which is greater; the number of people killed in the 9/11 terrorist attacks or the number of people killed in the Bhopal accident? -> While both events were tragic and had significant loss of life, the 9/11 attacks had a higher death toll. 20) How does this relate to the course concept of “mastery of the material”? -> Know thyself and know the material.
