Name: _____ James Carpenter__________________________________________________________________________ 1405 Lab 01: Safety First Directions: complete this lab exercise AFTER you watch all of the required safety videos posted 1. Read the following paragraph and list five things that the student did wrong. Frank frequently missed lab. He decided to make up three labs on Friday afternoon. When he arrived at the lab, dressed in baggy shorts, a sweatshirt with floppy sleeves and flip flops, he could not find the lab supervisor. Since the lab door was open, he decided to start the first lab right away as he had to get to work early that day. No one was in the lab, but he saw the trays of chemicals on the supply table. He had forgotten the combination for his lock and could not open his drawer, but he did find an open drawer to use. He remembered he had left his safety glasses at home, which was half an hour away from school. Since he was in a hurry, he started the lab without his glasses. He found the tray of chemicals that he needed, but was confused in the first part of one lab. The lab called for 1 M sodium hydroxide; he didn’t know what the 1 M stood for, but he did know the formula for sodium hydroxide. He noticed one bottle in a tray for another lab marked 6 M sodium hydroxide. Since the chemical had the correct name, he decided to use it. When he added the 6 M sodium hydroxide to the other chemical, it started reacting violently so he poured the mixture down the drain. After part one of the lab, he had to get to work so he left the chemical tray at the station and hurried out of lab. Below list 5 mistakes AND list 5 ways the lab can be corrected: (10 points) The mistakes he made was wearing flip-flops, no safety glasses, floppy sleeves, starting lab without permission, he didn’t clean his area when he was finished. He should wear close-toed shoes, safety glasses, and long pants, and do lab with the supervisor, he needs to know what the chemical are and know what to do so its correct. Next time he should pour it down the drain and dispose of it properly. 2. Answer the following true/false statements, by putting a T or an F in front of the statement. (16 points) __ F___ (a) Safety glasses/goggles should be worn only when working with a heat source. ___ T__ (b) A safety shower can be used to wash off chemical spills or fires from clothes. ___ T__ (c) If a chemical gets in your eye(s), flushing your eye(s) with water for approximately10-15 seconds is sufficient. __ F___ (d) If there is an explosion and an extremely large fire in the lab, attempt to put out the fire yourself with the fire extinguisher. __ F___ (e) When lighting a burner, strike a match and then turn on the gas; if using a striker, turn the burner on first then use the striker. __ T___ (f) When using a fire extinguisher remember to PASS: pull the pin, aim the nozzle, squeeze the trigger and sweep at the base of the fire.
___ f__ (g) All chemical waste can safely be poured down the drain. __ T___ (h) Disposing of broken glass should be done in a cardboard container. /26 3. What are 3 pieces of protective equipment and what are their functions in the laboratory? (6 points) wearing safety glasses is for to protect your eyes from getting any type of harmful chemical in your eyes, a apron so nothing gets on your skin or clothes, some chemicals can burn you. A mask helps you protect your mouth and nose from anything that may splatter. 4. In what cases would you use the following materials: (10 points) a. Chemical Spill Kit- is used for spills, or leaks for chemicals and hazardous liquids, the kit will absorb it up. b. First Aid Kit- could be used for bandage or small injuries, minor burns. c. Safety Shower- is used when someone eyes or body gets exposed to some hazardous chemicals d. Eye Wash Station- when something or dangerous chemical gets in you eyes you would have to rinse them e. Fire Blanket- used for putting out small fires or someone clothing catches on fire you would throw it on them Laboratory Related Questions 5) If a fire alarm goes off, what should you do? (2 points) exist the building and make sure everyone arounds you exit the building safely 6) What do you put on acid spills: a. On the ground? (2 points) you should always use a chemical spill kit. b. On your skin? (2 points) You should use the safety shower to get it off your body 7) Describe the process of wafting. (2 points) Wafting is when you use you hand to push the smell towards your nose instead of actually putting your nose to the container. 8) What should you do with any unused reagents? Why should you not pour them into their original container? (2 points)
You should dispose of the unused reagents in a new container, you should never put them back in the original because It could contaminate it which isn’t good. 9) Describe the process used to clean up broken glass. (2 points) You should never use you hands and use a dustpan and broom to sweep the glass up, sweep more then once to make sure all glass is up. 10) What procedure do you use to dilute acids? (2 points) Acid is always diluted by adding water slowly while consistently stirring. 11) Which chemicals are safe to pour down a drain? What do you do with chemicals that are not safe to pour down the drain? (4 points) I don’t think you should pour any type of chemical down the drain you should ask your supervisor what you should do with the chemical. /34 Questions 1) Describe the steps used to light a Bunsen burner using: 1. A striker (2 points)

turn gas on at the source open the needle valve ¼ way until you hear gas bring the striker to the side and above the top of the barrel upside down and strike it until you see a yellow pallet light and then turn it up but make sure the flame is no higher den 1o inches 2. A match (2 points) right after turning the gas on light the match and slowly put it up the side of the barrel until it ignites the gas, 3. A lighter (2 points) open the gas valve fully and open the needle valve ½ turn. And use the lighter to light the flame and adjust flame. 2) Why should the gas supply valve be left off? (2 points) To avoid the risk of a gas leak 3) What color flame is best for heating process? (2 points) Blue flame 4) How would you handle a fire in the lab? Discuss 3 strategies. (6 points) I would grab the fire blanket and try to suffocate the fire, or I would run and grab the fire extinguisher and pull the pin and aim at the source of the fire, I alert everyone that it’s a fire and tell everyone to evacuate /16 Guidelines for using a Digital Balance 1. Level and zero the balance before use. /24 2. Never place chemicals directly on the balance. Use the TARE button to subtract the weight of any container (beaker, weigh paper, weigh boat, etc.) used, then add the sample and record the weight. 3. Only weigh objects at room temperature – weighing hot objects is dangerous, inaccurate, and can ruin the balance 4. Use the same balance throughout the experiment 5. Clean the balance after each use QUESTIONS: 1) A chemist weighs a beaker with a mass of 59.118 g. The chemist then weighs the sample in the beaker, and finds the mass to be 83.904 g. What is the mass of the sample? Show all work when calculating the mass of the sample for full credit. (5 points) 83.904g-59.118g=24.786g 2) How would failing to tare the balance affect your experiment? (2 points) You would put the container on the scale and zero it out. 3) What ways would weighing hot objects affect the balance? (2 points) Hot objects will be heated will weigh more the reason why is this because the gravitational force depends on the stress energy tension in the general relativity.
4) Why is it significant to use the same balance throughout the experiment? (2 points) Each balance is calibrated differently and a change of balance in the middle of an experiment can cause the mass readings to be off adding error to the experiment. Look at the information about Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and an actual SDS on the next two pages and answer the following questions. (a) How should this substance be stored? Store with amides, nitrates, and nitrites store in a cold dry place____________________________________________ (2 points) (b) What eye protection is recommended when working with this substance?___ chemical splash goggles _____________ (2 points) (c) Describe this material’s physical and chemical properties (list 3). _________________________ silver nitrate colorless, transparent, rhombic crystals, turn color if disposed to light in presence of organic materials ____________________________________________________________________________ (3 points) (d) What is the appearance and color of this substance?__ The substance is colorless and transparent ___________________ (2 points) (e) Is this material flammable? It’s a nonflammable solid._____________________ (2 points) (f) What steps should be pursued if you accidentally ingest silver nitrate? _____________________________ it's highly toxic if ingested, could be fatal by taking less then 2 grams can be fatal. ______________________________________________________________________________ (2 points) *****This is the last page that needs to be submitted. DO NOT submit the MSDS pages*****
