Create an original direct instruction lesson plan in the content area and grade level of your choice using the supporting document “Direct Instruction Lesson Plan Template” and “WGU Lesson Planning Guide.” Complete each of the following to finalize your lesson plan:
Direct Instruction Lesson Plan Template
General Information Lesson Title: Jarriums Subject(s): Science Grade/Level/Setting: 6
th
Grade, Science Class Prerequisite Skills/Prior Knowledge
Students are to be learning about the different types of ecosystems, and what makes an ecosystem function.
Standards and Objectives State/National Academic Standard(s): SC.6. L.14.2-Investigate and explain the components of the scientific theory of cells (cell theory): all organisms are composed of cells
SC.6.L.14.3-Recognize and explore how cells of all organisms undergo similar processes to maintain homeostasis, including extracting energy from food, getting rid of waste, and reproducing.
SC.6.L.14.4-Compare and contrast the structure and function of major organelles of plant and animal cells, including cell wall, cell membrane, nucleus, cytoplasm, chloroplasts, mitochondria,
and vacuoles
Learning Objective(s): Students will learn what a Jarrarium is. They will learn what an ecosystem is and how it works. They will learn how plants and small animals like snails or shrimp will thrive. Students will learn how a closed ecosystem can sustain life. Students will learn biology, ecology, chemistry and botany all while building and maintaining a Jarrarium. Students will also learn about the cycles of nature including the plant cycle, the water cycle, the carbon cycle and the nitrogen cycle. Students will learn how the plants play a very active part in those cycles.
Students will be able to compare each cycle with an 80% or better. Students will also be able to write a paragraph explaining why plants play a very important part in each of the cycles with a 75% on the final draft. Materials Technology
Half Gallon Glass Jar, Aqua soil, aqua-scaping tools, Plants, water sourced from a natural I will be using YouTube to describe the water cycle and how it is implemented in a
location.
Jarrarium. I would also be using Kahoot to introduce the vocabulary words. Students will be using iPad to answer questions on the Kahoot.

Language Demands
Specific ways that academic language
(vocabulary, functions, discourse, syntax) is used by students to participate in learning tasks through reading, writing, listening, and/or speaking to demonstrate their understanding. Language Function(s):
Students will be able to identify different ecosystems. Students will be able to recite the water cycle. Students will be able to identify the different parts in the plant cycle. Students will also be able to explain how all the cycles are present in an Jarrarium. Vocabulary:
Ecosystem
Water Cycle
Plant Cycle
Nitrogen Cycle
Carbon Cycle
Biosphere Self-Sustaining Discourse and/or Syntax:
Students will be able to use their vocabulary words to write about what they are seeing and how each cycle can be represented. Planned Language Supports:
As the teacher we would be going over the vocabulary before I introduced the lesson. I will also be using Kahoot to engage students into the lesson. Instructional Strategies and Learning Tasks

work together to build classroom jarrairum, Guided Practice:
Activity Description/Teacher
Student Actions
-Give students an activities-label the
water cycle
- Walk around and help students as needed. - Have Students work in small groups -Work on activities – label the water cycle
-Participate in classroom discussion -Correct any mistakes made Independent Student Practice:
Activity Description/Teacher
Student Actions
-
Go over the lesson and ask if there are questions about the lesson
-Pass out worksheets to be completed independently
-Work one on one with special needs
-
Ask any questions they may have
-Work independently on said work sheet
-Work with teacher if necessary -Rotating through the learning centers
students, EL Students, anyone who may need extra help/attention
-Rotate learning centers- Ipad, independent work, working in small group led by teacher -Having a group discussion – afterwards have students take quiz -Participate in group discussion
-Take Quiz Culminating or Closing Procedure/Activity:
Activity Description/Teacher
Student Actions
-Grade activities -Input grades into gradebook
-Go over the questions on the quiz -
- Check grades -Work on Missing assignments -Ask question Differentiated Instruction Consider how to accommodate for the needs of each type of student. Be sure that you provide content specific accommodations that help to meet a variety of learning needs.
Gifted and Talented:
Give students a higher level of activities such as an essay instead of a paragraph to write. I would also give them fill in the blank activities instead of Multiple choice questions. I would
have them help other students within their small groups EL:
Refer to vocab cards, more one-on-one time with teacher, use background knowledge, and then pair with a gifted student. Students with Other Special Needs:
Students will be using one on one time with teacher, visual aids, double time to complete activities
Assessment
Formative
Describe how you will monitor, support, and extend student thinking.
I will be walking around to monitor the students while they are working independently. I will be stopping to ask the class questions as they pop up during independent studies. If students fail a test or quiz, I will be sitting them down to go over the questions on the assignment with them to help them understand.
Summative
(Quizzes, Tests, products) Student will be able to answer a 10-question quiz with at least 70% accuracy. Students will be able to take a 30-question test with 75% accuracy, students will be taking the test independently, and without help.
B.
Explain how the lesson plan from Part A could be modified to be a cross disciplinary lesson. Include modifications to each of the following in your explanation:
o
Instruction
o
Skills
o
Content
My Jarrarium lesson plan can be used with English and Language arts, as well as Mathematics. Students can write an essay on a self-sustaining ecosystem. Students can answer a prompt on how a Jarrarium is a self-
sustaining ecosystem. Students can also write arguing why a Jarrarium still has to have human contact to survive. Students can budget for the supplies and materials to start a Jarrarium. Students can add and subtract money. 1.
Explain how the modified lesson from part B aligns to all relevant standards. Include the associated alphanumeric code and full description for each standard in your explanation.
o
ELA.6.C.1.3
-Write and support a claim using logical reasoning, relevant evidence from sources, elaboration, and a logical organizational structure with varied transitions
o
ELA.6.C.1.5- Improve writing by planning, revising, and editing, considering feedback from adults and peers.
o
ELA.6.C.4.1-Conduct research to answer a question, drawing on multiple reliable and valid sources, and refocusing the inquiry when appropriate.
o
ELA.6.V.1.1-Integrate academic vocabulary appropriate to grade level in speaking and writing.
o
ELA.6.V.1.3-Apply knowledge of context clues, figurative language, word relationships, reference materials, and/or background knowledge to determine the connotative and denotative
o
MA.6.AR.2.2-Write and solve one-step equations in one variable within a mathematical or real-
world context using addition and subtraction.
o
MA.6.NSO.2.3-Solve multi-step real-world problems involving any of the four operations with positive multi-digit decimals or positive.
2.
Explain how your modifications to the plan’s instruction, skills, and content would increase the relevance of the lesson and impact student engagement and motivation in the lesson.
o
These standards relate to the modified lessons because the code ELA.6.C.1.3
which states write
and support a claim using logical reasoning, relevant evidence from sources, elaboration, and a logical organizational structure with varied transitions fits the modified lesson because students will be write a essay on why Jarrariums are a self-sustaining ecosystem. They will be using research and reasoning to support their claim. Before writing the essay students must plan, edit and revise their essays before they turn in their final draft. This supports ELA.6.c.1.5 – Improve

writing by planning, revising and edition, considering feedback from adults and peers. Because they are doing an experiment and then having to write an essay on what they have saw and learned students will also be doing research on Jarrariums which goes with the standard of ELA.6.c.4.1. Students will be using vocabulary word into their writing and they will be using figurative language with in their writing on how Jarrariums can be self-sustaining ecosystems. Adding these to the writing will make then a better writer and goes along with the standards of ELA.6.61.1 as well as ELA.6.v.1.3. o
By having students plan out their purchases and budgeting the supplies to make a Jarrarium students will be applying mathematics to the lesson. Students will be solving equations while using adding and subtracting. They will also be using decimals because we are dealing with money and this correlate with the standards of MA.6AR.2.2 and MA.6.NSO.2.
