Chapter 17 discusses trends in biotechnology and the field of metagenomics. For your discussion post: 1. Explain why metagenomics is probably the most revolutionary application of genomics. What application of genomics would best serve your community and why? 2. Research Bioremediation as an application of metagenomics, and comment on how this mechanism can be utilized as an environmental management intervention within your community. Here are some videos to get you started: Can Microbes Clean Up our Oily Mess Researchers Could use Microbes to Clean Mine Sites Genomics is the study of the entire genome, which includes the entire set of genes, their nucleotide sequence, organization, and communication within and between species. 2013 (OpenStax). Understanding DNA ordering in genomics is critical because it is useful in a variety of research fields, including medicine and biotechnology. Pure culture was a traditional laboratory method for studying microorganisms. When it was discovered that many organisms could not be easily nurtured in pure culture, microbiologists began to question their beliefs that the microbial world had been defeated. 2004 (Heldelsman). Because of its ability to analyze microbial societies in the best possible way, metagenomics is known as the most revolutionary application of genomics. Medical genomics, I believe, will be the application of genomics that will best serve my community. A large number of diseases are caused by the negative effects of our environment and mutations. Because genomics is one of the best ways we can understand genes, the causes, and prevention of these diseases, it is a simple way for medical researchers to look for drugs that can treat a variety of genetic diseases. Some diseases in circulation, such as heritable diseases, will be prevented or tracked from younger generations, such as Spinocerebellar ataxia type 1, which is spread through the gene from one generation to the next and multiplied as new generations are born, thanks to ongoing research on disease treatment. When the disease is detected in the younger generation and tracked, treatment can begin, which will aid in the prevention of the disease in future generations, eventually leading to the disease's total eradication. It is preferable to begin treatment of diseases at an early stage, when there are fewer complications, and when a person's lifespan can be extended. Reference: Preface - biology 2E . OpenStax.
