Week 1 Discussion Bio-3020 In the United States, obesity is on the rise and has been since the 1980s. Obesity is defined by BMI (Body Mass Index), which measures a person’s weight divided by height in meters squared. (Betts, 2022) The normal range for a healthy person is between 18 and 24.9 kg/m^2, and anything over that is considered overweight. (Betts, 2022) Obesity is a BMI greater than 30 kg/m^2 and can come from a variety of factors, such as a sedentary lifestyle, overeating, and genetic factors, to name a few. Obese individuals are at a higher risk of developing severe medical conditions that include type 2 diabetes, hypertension, coronary heart disease, and other health complications. Obesity is a fundamental problem in the United States and needs to be addressed because it is unhealthy and can lead to numerous health problems. Obesity can cause so many health problems that it can easily disrupt the homeostatic systems that operate by becoming imbalanced. For example, in one of these systems, the levels of body dissatisfaction, negative affect and high- energy, low-nutrient consumption run out of control, disrupting the homeostasis of the body.
