1 Feminist, Solution-Focused, and Narrative Therapy Application Kirsten L. Gabbard College of Humanities and Social Sciences, Grand Canyon University CNL-500: Theories and Models of Counseling Professor Larsen October 25, 2023
2 Solution-Focused Therapy Application The approach that will have the most impact on Ana is solution-focused therapy. She is currently suffering from feelings of being lost, hopeless and that there are no solutions. As an unemployed single mother because her husband is deployed overseas, her feelings are understandable and natural. She has no network of support because she is an immigrant and has no family or friends that live close enough to offer any assistance. Solution-focused therapy would be successful for Ana because it is a shorter version of therapy so she will observe results quickly. She will also be able to stay motivated throughout the counseling process when she sees her accomplishment of the smaller goals that lead to the overall goals ((Jerome et.al., 2023), 2008) As a mother, this therapy will prove to be beneficial to herself and her son because the results are seen quickly. Counseling Goals and Intervention Strategies The first goal that must be completed in solution-focused therapy is to define exactly what the client desires to accomplish and then create a personalized treatment plan to help them achieve it. Each goal that is included in the plan needs to be specific, attainable and concrete. The client is encouraged to focus on their present and future as well as become an active participant in creating their life. Instead of discussing past concerns in detail, the counselor will focus on exploring how life will be different once the issue is resolved. The interventions that are used in solution-focused therapy include normalizing, presupposing change, scaling questions, the miracle questions and more (Miller, 2022). A benefit of this therapy is that there are a variety of approaches that can be tailored to fit each individual client's needs, goals, strengths and weaknesses. Process of Treatment
3 The process of treatment for solution-focused therapy is briefer than most other therapeutic approaches. Solution-focused therapy is used as a basis for school counseling practices because it can be implemented and effective quickly (Miller, 2022). The relationship between the counselor and client is more collaborative instead of being primarily guided by the counselor. It is important to maintain a positive environment for the client throughout the entire therapeutic process and avoid letting their personal thoughts or beliefs get in the way of maintaining harmony. By working together in tandem, the counselor and client can point out what is not efficient and increase the effectiveness by working together to continue growth (Miller, 2022). Social and Cultural Needs of the Client The main benefit of solution-focused therapy is that it is completely flexible and can be used in multiple settings with clients of all needs. Solution-focused therapy techniques emerged from working with a multicultural client population and have been proven over and over again to address clients with diverse problems (Miller, 2014). There is vast potential for solution-focused therapy to be used in group settings as well because it adds social involvement and additional accountability in the achievement of goals (Miller, 2014). In general there is less time being spent on addressing symptoms and diagnosis, it is an efficient approach that can quickly help Ana return to her regular self and improve all aspects of her life. Constructivist Philosophy Solution-focused therapy is a constructivist therapy as they both emphasize the clients strengths and which solutions may already be obtainable by them (Mahoney & Granvold, 2005). The focus will be on what is already working in their life and increasing it as opposed to focusing on what is going wrong. Counselors that use constructivist philosophy will interact and

4 facilitate the discussion rather than lead like in other approaches. Counselors and clients will work together as a collaborative team rather than an instructor and student (Mahoney & Granvold, 2005). Constructivism incorporates active agency, order and a sense of self. The meaning in the clients life is created by their social constructs instead of the individual's perception. A person's reality can vary because it is created out of their beliefs of themselves and others. Prevent Undue Harm A counselor that uses collaborative or postmodern approaches should prevent undue harm by implementing the narrative process and follow all the codes of ethics laid out by the American Counseling Association. Counselors need to be competent in what they do as well as have the proper certifications to implement any theory into their practice to avoid undue harm (American Counseling Association, 2014). Counselors must not only obtain a masters degree to perform but they also have a variety of hours to complete before practicing. Conclusion Solution-focused therapy is an effective approach that is used by counselors that practice a variety of disciplines because it is flexible and quick. This approach emphasizes that the client should move forward and stay motivated to achieve a healthy perspective rather than rely on histories, diagnosis or symptoms. The counselor should always respect the client and allow for them to have a significant amount of input into each therapy session. The solution-focused therapies timeline is short, fast and effective. Ana would benefit from this type of therapy as it will give her hope and keep her motivated because it celebrates the completion of every small goal on the way to the final goal.
