Conserving Biodiversity Stefan Jandura SCI-200-H7295 Part Two: Speaking Notes Draft 10/11/2023
My topic’s scientific background: Researching methods to help protect a native fauna species directly relates to the field of biology and environmental science. Since I am researching a possible way in which we can reverse the effects of habitat fragmentation, it can have a direct effect on the health of a turtle population and the environment that the species resides within. Impact on my audience: This should have a direct impact on my audience, the New Jersey department of fish and wildlife, since there are many species of turtle that are deemed either vulnerable, critically threatened, or endangered reside within the state. Within my research the Eastern Box turtle, Bog turtles, and Spotted turtles have been studied to a varying degree. This is critical to those who work within the department of fish and wildlife since turtles play a key role in ecosystem food chains and are vital nutrient recyclers in many of their home environments. My empirical evidence: "The spatial changes in individual home ranges observed at both sites suggest that Bog Turtles are capable of shifting their movements to adapt to habitat changes, provided that habitat connectivity still exists," (Sirios et al., 2014). Why this issue is important to me personally: This is an extremely important subject because when an ecosystem is effected by population decline of one species, it can have disastrous effects on the rest of the ecosystem. I have lived and was raised in the state of New Jersey all my life and the wilderness surrounding me has been a large part of my upbringing. I have chosen a career path that has a direct effect on the
environment so I can ensure there is some form of healthy natural environment for my children to enjoy, including the turtles I grew up catching in the woods when I was a child. Impact on my thinking: This course has helped to cement the reasoning behind pursuing a career within the environmental sector. While researching a topic that is personally connected to my upbringing and my locale, it has helped me to further understand my own drive within the field. Since I have been pursuing a scientific degree throughout my academic career, I have had the critical thinking mindset throughout my time in this class. This research allowed me to test my ability to use the scientific method in an effective and applicable manner. If anything, this has simply reminded me of why I started going back to school in the first place.
