Zac Efron StDEv 109 Assignment 2 Self-Study I came to BYU last Fall and have always considered myself a very good student. Prior to coming to BYU (and out of high school) I made almost all A’s and was considered one of the better students in high school. History: My first test at BYU was in IHUM 201 and I made a C+- I was devastated and talked to my teacher in a very emotionally charged meeting. By that, I mean I cried. I just never thought I was a C student. She showed me some study tips and was very considerate. However, before that first meeting I wanted to leave BYU and go back to the college near my hometown. It was nice to find someone who had kind words and could help me understand that I did not have to be “the best“ in order to excel. I want to go to graduate school and know I will need to improve some study skills. I know I can get there and feel that my potential as a student is high and it will be reached with diligent study and by polishing a few skills. I think I have a fairly positive attitude. Thanks to that first conversation with a teacher in IHUM 201 I grew to love school (that may be an exaggeration). A lot of the time I like studying and am starting to see the importance of learning and how much enjoyment it can bring. My Student Development teacher (wonder who that is?) has helped me see that my love of the world and cultures can be of vital use in the workforce and my Geography major matches me perfectly. I am grateful to academic advisors who helped me find what I loved. (I think one of my favorite memories of BYU will be when my advisor in Geoguessr in his office at lunch). Mindset: I belong at BYU I feel that I could have found this new energy at just about any school, but living in Heritage has been wonderful. I found great solace when I discovered that my roommates had concerns to and were willing to share. This is a good place not perfect by I feel it is my place now. However, I don’t agree with everything at BYU (policies), but I can still be happy here. I can change my abilities If I didn’t believe this I would not be in this class. I am here to learn to study better. Last semester my roommate share the What works article and it helped. I look forward to learning more and making school less work. I can succeed I didn’t believe this at one point. Maybe I have changed my definition of success. I haven’t lowered my standard, I changed the direction and how I measure success. This work has value I am string to feel the difference between doing classes and learning. Weird though it is, I think I like it. I want a degree in Geo-Spatial Intelligence and even though I don’t know what kind of job I want I am excited about far in the future the new ways I may be developing to use this technology.
STUDENT SUCCESS MODEL: Ability: I came here and doubting myself, but teachers helped my realize that not only can I do this work I can do it well. Motivation: I want to succeed here. I want to get a degree, learn to love learning and develop that with my younger brothers and potential children. I can say my desire is strong. At one point I saw i t as “jumping through the hoops” to just get it done. Now I understand what one of my high school teachers meant when she would say the importance of the journey is not where you go, but sometimes it is how you go! Purpose: I am getting a degree to help me find work I love and know how to learn as I work and develop. At first, I just thought it was something you just needed to do. Now I know that my purpose lies in how I do it. I have learned that when I know another student is not doing well or struggling that I can talk to that person, encourage and motivate that. This is an outcome from a purpose for being here that I didn’t think I could understand until I got here. Commitment: I do my work. I don’t always want to do it, but it comes first or at least I re- prioritize. Those first few weeks I had do much freedom and I played. My apartment (mates? Co-dwellers? Guys I live with?) decided to put school as a priority and it was nice to have others who understood that sometimes work is good even though it is not always fun. A lot of times I am the ones that remind them we need to go to the library. Ways to Strengthen: Work Differently: I have done ok at BYU in the first two semesters. However, I spend A LOT of time studying!!! I want to learn to get more out of what I do. I need to set goals and get a picture of what needs to happen when I sit down to work. I think part of it is just to be organized better. Read: I have classes that require a lot of reading and it is not all covered in class and notes. To be hones I just fade in and out of reading. I frown when I hear people in class who read the same thing and they had life-changing epiphanies. There has to be a better way. Organization: I want to plan better and more lone- term. I don’t like all night study sessions and trying to finish papers at the last minute. There simply has to be a better way. Procrastination: See above. I am pretty energized about doing things better and I think if I can keep this energy up it will help. But what happens when I slip? My attitude: I want to channel it. I am excited, scared and hopeful. I want to do better in school (not just grades) so I can do better in life. My dad taught me to develop habits now or things won’t be different after college.
