Introduction Attention Getter & Common Ground: Today, I’d like to discuss a very intriguing and chapter in human history – the fall of the Roman Empire. Credibility: Initially I lacked knowledge about the topic however, upon hearing about the events that led up to the fall of the Roman empire I felt there were lessons to be learned. Thesis: I will attempt to provide you with a short overview of the factors that led to the fall of the Roman Empire and lessons we can learn from the events. Preview Statement: To do this, I’ll cover three areas: The background of the Roman Empire as a dominant civilization, the key factors that contributed to its decline, and the lessons we can learn from the events. Transition: The decline and eventual collapse of the civilization, which had once dominated the world, is a subject that has fascinated scholars and historians for centuries. Body Main Point 1: Background of the Roman Empire as a dominant civilization 1. The Roman Empire’s peak was incredible, the empire spanned across three continents, Europe, Africa, and Asia. 2. Present the grandeur and significance of the Roman Empire. Transition: So, what led to its fall? Main Point 2: The key factors that contributed to the decline of the Roman Empire 1. Transition: The end of the Roman Empire was detailed in an article written by Edward Watts in a Time.com article in October 2021 where he states, “In September of 476 AD, the barbarian commander Odoacer forced the teenaged Western Roman emperor Romulus Augustus to resign his office.” This event marked the end of a civilization that lasted over 100 years.
Main Point 3/Conclusion: The lessons we can learn 1. Review Main Points: In conclusion, the fall of the Roman Empire was not due to single incident but due to a long series of events. 2. Reiterate Thesis: The story of the Roman Empire serves as a reminder of the fragility of civilization. 3.
