In
the
1960s
and
1970s,
art
critics
such
as
Clement
Greenberg
proclaimed
that
painting
was
dead.
They
argued
that
the
medium
had
reached
its
apex
in
the
early
20th
century
with
the
movements
of
Impressionism,
Expressionism,
and
Cubism,
and
that
there
was
nothing
new
to
say
in
paint.
However,
painting
has
not
only
survived,
but
thrived
in
the
decades
since.
Contemporary
artists
have
continued
to
innovate
and
experiment
with
the
medium,
finding
new
ways
to
express
themselves
through
paint.
Some
examples
of
contemporary
artists
who
have
pushed
the
boundaries
of
painting
include:
Cy
Twombly: Twombly's
paintings
are
often
characterized
by
their
gestural
brushwork
and
use
of
scrawls
and
scribbles.
His
work
is
often
seen
as
a
challenge
to
traditional
notions
of
beauty
and
representation.
Francis
Bacon:
Bacon's
paintings
are
often
disturbing
and
grotesque,
depicting
distorted
figures
and
scenes
of
violence.
His
work
explores
the
dark
side
of
human
nature
and
the
fragility
of
the
human
condition.
Jasper
Johns:
Johns'
paintings
often
incorporate
everyday
objects,
such
as
flags
and
targets,
into
his
compositions.
His
work
challenges
the
boundaries
between
art
and
life
and
explores
the
nature
of
perception.
Willem
de
Kooning:
De
Kooning's
paintings
are
characterized
by
their
energetic
brushwork
and
use
of
bright
colors.
His
work
is
often
seen
as an
expression
of
the
artist's
unconscious
mind.
Frank
Stella:
Stella's
paintings
are
often
abstract
and
geometric,
with
a
focus
on
the
formal
elements
of
art
such
as
line,
shape,
and
color.
His
work
is
seen
as
a
challenge
to
traditional
notions
of
painting
and
the
role
of
the
artist.
These
are
just
a
few
examples
of
the
many
contemporary
artists
who
are
continuing
to
create
innovative
and
exciting
paintings.
Painting
is
not
dead;
it
is
simply
evolving.
What
has
risen
to
replace
painting?
