For this week's discussion, I want to focus on the concept of "Expressionism," which begins to appear in Early Medieval manuscript illumination (The Ebbo Gospels) and sculpture (the Bronze Doors of Bishop Bernward of Hildesheim, which was based on manuscript illumination). This use of "Expressionism" is different from anything we
have studied thus far (abstraction, naturalism, idealism, and realism), and will become a defining feature of Romanesque art.
To get a better feel for the concept of "Expressionism" in art, listen to Met curator Peter Barnet describe a Romanesque ivory plaque from museum's collection. You can also visit the museum's object page here:

Like much Romanesque art, this carved plaque was probably influenced by Early Medieval manuscript illuminations. What stylistic features does it have in common with works we studied this week?
Your posts this week:
Based on what you learned from the description above and your chapter readings this week, what is "Expressionism," and how is it different than realistic, naturalistic, or idealistic art we have learned about in our previous chapters. This sets up the "compare/contrast" discussion forum this week. What are the advantages to telling stories in this way?
Guidelines for your compare/contrast post this week:
Select 1 Early Medieval image from the Metropolitan Museum of Art or the Cloisters museum collections:
o

Then, chose 1 image from a previous chapter you have liked this semester (Greek/Roman, Egyptian, Early Christian, etc.).
Post embed your images for us to see and give the identifying information
Link the museum URL to the Early Medieval piece
Then, compare and contrast the images for us! Guide us through your understanding of the images through describing both of them for the class.
Finally, ask a few questions for the class to help guide the responses!
