Concept introduction: Alkanes are the common hydrocarbons popularly used as fuels. Chemically they are essentially made of hydrogen and carbon through covalent bonds. Alkanes are distinguished by presence of only single covalent bonds.

Alkenes are distinguished by presence of one sigma and one pi bond. Alkynes have one sigma and two pi bonds.

Alkanes are essentially pure hydrocarbons with no additional functional groups. They may be also termed as saturated hydrocarbons that essentially reflect the fact that no multiple bonds or rings should be present. Hence, all such structures with halogen or alcoholic, alkene or carbonyl compounds can be discarded. Therefore, the molecules that do not represent an alkane are crossed out as follows:
