Explanation of Solution

Given:

Mass of the car moving towards north (+ y-direction) is my=925 kg

Initial speed of the car moving towards north (+ y-direction) is vi,y=20.1 m/s

Mass of the car moving towards west (- x-direction) is mx=1865 kg

Initial speed of the car moving towards west (- x-direction) is vi,x=13.4 m/s or vi,x=13.4 m/s (towards +x-direction)

After the collision two cars are stuck together.

Formula used:

Momentum (p) is the product of mass (m) and velocity (v) of a moving body. This can be given by the equation

  p=mv(1)

Initial momentum of the car moving towards north can be given by the equation

  pi,y=myvi,y(2)

Initial momentum of the car moving towards west can be given by the equation

  pi,x=mxvi,x(3)

Since momentum is conserved, final momentum of the system is equal to the initial momentum of the system. That is

  pf=pi

  pf=(pi,y)2+(pi,x)2(4)

Final momentum of the system can also be calculated using the equation,

  pf=(my+mx)vf(5)

Where the sum of the masses of the two cars is taken since after collision two cars are stuck together.

  vf is the final speed of the cars

From equation (5) final velocity of the cars can be calculated as,

  vf=pf(my+mx)(6)

Direction of motion of the cars after collision can be calculated using the equation,

  θ=tan1(pi,ypi,x)(7)

Calculation:

Initial momentum of the car moving towards north can be calculated by substituting the numerical values in equation (2) ,

  pi,y=(925 kg)(20.1 m/s)

  =1.86×104 kg.m/s

Initial momentum of the car moving towards west can be calculated by substituting the numerical values in equation (3) ,

  pi,x=(1865 kg)(13.4 m/s)

  =2.5×104 kg.m/s

Substituting the values of pi,y and pi,x in equation (4) , final momentum of the system is

  pf=(1.86×104 kg.m/s)2+(2.5×104 kg.m/s)2

  =3.45×108kg2.m2/s2+6.25×108kg2.m2/s2

  =9.7×108kg2.m2/s2

  =3.11×104 kg.m/s

The final velocity of the cars can be calculated by substituting the numerical values in equation (6) ,

  vf=3.11×104 kg.m/s(925 kg+1865 kg)

  =3.11×104 kg.m/s(2790 kg)

  =11.15 m/s

Direction of motion of the cars after collision can be calculated by substituting the numerical values in equation (7) ,

  θ=tan1(1.86×104 kg.m/s2.5×104 kg.m/s)

  =tan1(0.744)

  =36.60 , north of west

Conclusion:

Speed of the cars after collision is 11.15 m/s and are directed north of west.
