Answer to Problem 51A

Object D

Object A

Object B

Object C and Object E

Explanation of Solution

Given:

Object A : mass is mA=2.5 kg and velocity is vA=1.0 m/s east

Object B : mass is mB=3.0 kg and velocity is vB=0.9 m/s west

Object C : mass is mC=3.0 kg and velocity is vC=1.2 m/s west

Object D : mass is mD=4.0 kg and velocity is vD=0.5 m/s north

Object E : mass is mE=4.0 kg and velocity is vE=0.9 m/s east

Formula used:

The momentum (p) is the product of mass (m) and velocity (v) of a moving body. That is,

  p=mv

Hence, the momentum of an object A is,

  pA=mAvA  (1)

The momentum of an object B is,

  pB=mBvB  (2)

The momentum of an object C is,

  pC=mCvC  (3)

The momentum of an object D is,

  pD=mDvD  (4)

The momentum of an object E is,

  pE=mEvE  (5)

Calculation:

The momentum of the objects A , B , C , D , and E can be calculated by substituting the numerical values in equations (1) , (2) , (3) , (4) , and (5) respectively. That is,

  pA=(2.5 kg)(1.0 m/s)

  =2.5 kg.m/s east

  pB=(3.0 kg)(0.9 m/s)

  =2.7 kg.m/s west

  pC=(3.0 kg)(1.2 m/s)

  =3.6 kg.m/s west

  pD=(4.0 kg)(0.5 m/s)

  =2.0 kg.m/s north

  pE=(4.0 kg)(0.9 m/s)

  =3.6 kg.m/s east

Conclusion:

The given objects are ranked according to the momentum they have, from least to greatest as:

Object D

Object A

Object B

Object C and Object E
