Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The resonance formulas for given molecule has to be written and the NN bond length in the molecule is estimated.
Concept introduction:
Resonance formula:
The electron structure of a given molecule contains delocalized bonding via possible structure of all electron-dot formulas is known as resonance description.
One form of resonance stable structure is converted into other forms. It possible in both single and multiple bonds molecule. The electron-dot formulas differing only in the placement of single and double bonds
Lewis structure otherwise known as Lewis dot diagrams or electron dot structures that show the bond between atoms and lone pairs of electrons that are present in the molecule. Lewis structure represents each atom and their position in structure using the chemical symbol. Excess electrons forms the lone pair are given by pair of dots, and are located next to the atom.

- Using the standard enthalpy of formation data in Appendix G, calculate the bond energy of the carbon-sulfur double bond in CS2.arrow_forwardIn which of the following molecules does the sulfur have an expanded octet? For those that do, write the Lewis structure. (a) SO2 (b) SF4 (c) SO2Cl2 (d) SF6arrow_forwardUsing the bond dissociation enthalpies in Table 8.8, estimate the enthalpy of combustion of gaseous methane, CH4, to give water vapor and carbon dioxide gas.arrow_forward
- Write all resonance structures of chlorobenzene, C6H5Cl, a molecule with the same cyclic structure as benzene. In all structures, keep the CCl bond as a single bond. Which resonance structures are the most important?arrow_forwardNitrosyl azide, N4O, is a pale yellow solid first synthesized in 1993. Write the Lewis structure for nitrosyl azide.arrow_forwardn your own words, what is meant by the term electronegativity? What are the trends across and down the periodic table for electronegativity? Explain them, and describe how they are consistent with trends of ionization energy and atomic radii.arrow_forward
- Using the standard enthalpy of formation data in Appendix G, show how the standard enthalpy of formation of HCl(g) can be used to determine the bond energy.arrow_forwardWhich of these compounds would be expected to have the LARGEST lattice energy? Why? Li2O, Rb2O, or Na2O .arrow_forwardSulfur tetrafluoride reacts slowly with oxygen gas to form sulfur tetrafluoride monoxide. Write a balanced chemical equation for the reaction. In the sulfur tetrafluoride monoxide molecule the O atom and the four F atoms are bonded to a central S atom. Write a Lewis structure for this molecule in which the formal charges of all atoms is zero. Use bond energies to estimate the enthalpy of the above reaction. (S-F bond energy = 327 kJ/mole). Is it endothermic or exothermic? Determine the electron geometry of the molecule and predict two possible molecular geometries. Which of the two molecular geometries in part d is more likely to be observed? Explain.arrow_forward
- 10.) The structural formula of a certain aldehyde (related to formaldehyde) is H3C-CH2-CHO. Draw a Lewis structure for this aldehyde and determine the number of bonds present. Note that a single or a double or a triple bond counts as one bond. Write the number, not the word.arrow_forwardChloral, Cl3C—CH=O, reacts with water to form the sedative and hypnotic agent chloral hydrate, Cl3C—CH(OH)2. Draw Lewis structures for these substances, and describe the change in molecular shape, if any, that occurs around each of the carbon atoms during the reaction.arrow_forwardThe enthalpy change for the reaction between two molecules of carbon oxysulfide (COS) to form one molecule of CO2 and one molecule of CS2, as shown below, is –3.2 × 10–24 kJ per molecule of COS. The bond energy for the C=S bond in CS2 has been determined to be 552 kJ/mol. What is the apparent bond energy of a carbon–sulfur bond in COS? Use the bond energies below. Bonds Bond Energy(kJ/mole) C=S 552 C=O 799 Note: A C=O bond adjacent to another double bond is not the same as a C=O bond that is not adjacent to another double bond.arrow_forward
