Chapter 8, Problem 60SE

No-Carb Diet A weight-loss diet claims that it causes weight loss by eliminating carbohydrates (breads and starches) from the diet. To test this claim, researchers randomly assign over-weight subjects to two groups. Both groups eat the same amount of calories, but one group eats almost no carbs, and the other group includes carbs in their meals. After 2 months, the researchers test the claim that the no-carb diet is better than the usual diet. They record the proportion of each group that lost more than 5 % of their initial weight. They then announce that they failed to reject the null hypothesis. Which of the following are valid interpretations of the researchers’ findings?

a. There were no significant differences in effectiveness between the no-carb diet and the carb diet.

b. The no-carb diet and the carb diet were equally effective.

c. The researchers did not see enough evidence to conclude that the no-carb diet was more effective.

d. The no-carb diet was less effective than the carb diet.

A dietician has developed a new diet which is claimed to reduce LDL cholesterol levels for those who use the diet. The dietician wants to test the diet by sampling a random group of 25 people. The dietician will measure the LDL cholesterol levels of each of the 25 people and then measure their cholesterol levels after people in the sample have used the diet for eight weeks. Which of the following tests would be most appropriate for this study? O a. t-test of one sample O b. t-test of two independent samples O c. z-test of two independent samples O d. t-test of paired samples e. Chi-square test of independence
Determine whether the study depicts an observational study or an experimental study. A study was done to see if sugar consumption can cause hypoeractivity in children. The researcher took four groups of children and assigned different amounts of sugar the children had to consume. After a certain period of time, they assessed whether or not the children were hyperactive.
The mango is considered the "king of fruits" in many parts of the world. Mangoes are generally harvested at the mature green stage and ripen up during the marketing process of transport, storage, and so on. During this process, about 30% of the fruit is wasted. Because of this, the impact of harvest stage and storage conditions on the postharvest quality are of interest. In this experiment, the fruit was harvested at 80, 95, or 110 days after the fruit setting (the transition from flower to fruit) and then stored at temperatures of 20∘C, 30∘C, or 40∘C. For each harvest time and storage temperature, a random sample of mangoes was selected, and the time to ripening was measured.     What are the factors, the treatments, and the response variables? Take each item from the answer bank and place into the appropriate category.
