Chapter 8, Problem 29RQ
Summary Introduction

To review:

The reactions involving the conversion of galactose into a glycolytic intermediate with the help of Haworth formulas.

Introduction:

Galactose is a monosaccharide sugar, which means that it cannot be broken down further to produce more sugar units. Galactose is an epimer of glucose, which means that the two molecules differ in their configuration at the stereogenic center only. A stereogenic center is a pointthat holds all the ligands present in a compound. During the metabolization of galactose, certain enzymes are involved that help in the formation of the intermediates involved in the process of glycolysis.

The structural formula of all compounds involved in the metabolism of galactose can be represented by using the Haworth formula. A Haworth projection is used to represent the cyclic structure of a compound.

Biochemistry Please help. Thank you What is the importance of glutamic acid in the metabolism of nitrogen from amino acids? (we know therole; it’s used to remove the nitrogen from amino acids so that the remaining carbon skeleton can bebroken down by the “usual” pathways, but what is the important, unique role that only glutamicacid/glutamate can do?)
