- Cost Allocation; Cost Shifting In the last several years, airlines have succeeded in boosting profits by adding fees for previously free services such as in-flight snacks and meals, checked baggage, priority boarding, and other services. These fees have caused some shifts in customer behavior,as more airline passengers bring their own snacks on the airline and pack a smaller bag that isacceptable for “carry-on.” By using carry-on luggage, the airline customer can save $25 or more inbaggage-checking fees. This situation has resulted in a cost shifting for passengers, airlines, and airport security. As the number of checked bags decreases, the cost of baggage handling for the airlinesdecreases (and revenues increase for those bags that are checked). In contrast, the costs and delaysin security checkpoints increase as security personnel must check additional carry-on bags, causingdelays for passengers and the need for additional security personnel to handle the increased numberof carry-on…arrow_forwardCASE OUTSOURCING OF HOSPITAL SERVICES Due to financial pressures that many hospitals face, the Deacon- ess Clinic in Billings, Montana, decided to outsource a number of services, although in somewhat different ways. First, the hospital outsourced its cafeteria food service. Although the food service employees were hired by the outside firm, they still felt a sense of ownership of their jobs, and still felt connected to the hospital because of the family atmosphere in the kitchen and the cafeteria. When the hospital tried the same thing with housekeeping, employee turnover became a problem. An investigation revealed that because the housekeeping employees were more isolated in their work, they lost what little feeling of being connected to the hospital they had. The problem was solved by hiring the employees back but using the outsource company to manage housekeeping. The hospital also decided to outsource its laundry service. This time, the hospital approached a rival hospital about…arrow_forwarddescribe systematic approach to long term capacity decisions ?arrow_forward

- Since opening day, Arnold Palmer Hospital has experienced an explosive growth in demand for its services. One of only six hospitals in the U.S. to specialize in health care for women and children, Arnold Palmer Hospital has cared for over 1,500,000 patients who came to the Orlando facility from all 50 states and more than 100 other countries. With patient satisfaction scores in the top 10% of U.S. hospitals surveyed (over 95% of patients would recommend the hospital to others), one of Arnold Palmer Hospital’s main focuses is delivery of babies. Originally built with 281 beds and a capacity for 6,500 births per year, the hospital steadily approached and then passed 10,000 births. Looking at Table S7.4 , Executive Director Kathy Swanson knew an expansion was necessary. With continuing population growth in its market area serving 18 central Florida counties, Arnold Palmer Hospital was delivering the equivalent of a kindergarten class of babies every day and still not meeting demand.…arrow_forwardQ3) Case study below: Checkers plans to open its first “dark store” later this year to support growing demand for its Sixty60 on-demand grocery app. A dark store is a retail outlet that exists exclusively to support on-demand deliveries. It does not have a store front or retail customers, but purely assists with order fulfilment. It will be in Bree Street in Cape Town’s central business district, and comes as the group considers the capacity of its store base to meet the growing demand from SA’s leading grocery app.The Checkers Sixty60 one-hour delivery service was launched in November 2019 and order volumes continue to grow exponentially. It is already available in 300 locations across the country - up from 233 locations last year. About 23 000 products are on offer at in-store prices and it has created almost 6 300 jobs, according to Checkers. The need for such a store format is due to Checkers limiting the number of Sixty60 deliveries it can support from each retail store, which is…arrow_forwardDefine the concept of Capacity Focus?arrow_forward
