Chapter 7, Problem 7.30P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

Products for the given electrophilic addition are to be drawn and the more stable is to be predicted.

Concept introduction:

In the electrophilic addition reaction, the substrate containing a non-polar π bond (as part of a double or triple bond) approaches a strongly electron-deficient species (an electrophile) and a bond forms between an atom of the π bond and the electrophile. The other carbon of the π bond gets a positive charge as the π bond pair moves away from it. The product is a carbocation which is highly unstable because it bears a positive charge and has an incomplete octet. A carbocation can be stabilized by resonance.

The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) sets limits on healthful levels of air pollutants. The maximum level that the EPA considers safe for lead air pollution is 1.5 μg/m³ Part A If your lungs were filled with air containing this level of lead, how many lead atoms would be in your lungs? (Assume a total lung volume of 5.40 L.) ΜΕ ΑΣΦ = 2.35 1013 ? atoms ! Check your rounding. Your final answer should be rounded to 2 significant figures in the last step. No credit lost. Try again.
