Chapter 49, Problem 16TYPSS
Summary Introduction

To review:

Testing of hypothesis that the herbicide atrazine is a feminizing agent in amphibians.

Introduction:

The endocrine disruptors are the chemical substances that interfere and hinder the normal functioning of the hormones. Atrazine, a herbicide, is one such chemical that leads to the development of feminine characteristics and sex change in the male frogs.

The testosterone is the main male sex hormone that regulates the development of secondary sexual characteristics in males. It is produced in females also, but in small quantities. Thus, the given study was conducted to test whether the herbicide has any effect on the male sex hormones, which would be responsible for feminization in male amphibians. The results of the study to test the hypothesis that atrazine (herbicide) is an endocrine disruptor that feminizes male amphibians are given below:

Octopamine is a neurotransmitter in many species of invertebrates. In foraging bees, octopamine can influence how the bees obtain their food and it can determine their dance behavior, which is used as a form of communication between members of the colony. A study compared the difference in the water and nectar collected by two colonies of foraging bees that were treated with either a dose of octopamine or a control treatment. Which of the following statements identifies the likely outcome of the two colonies? A - Based on the decreased frequency of water foraging done by colony 1, it will have lower amounts of food stored within their hive than colony 2. B - Based on the increased frequency of water foraging done by colony 2, it will have lower amounts of food stored within their hive than colony 1. C - Bees that underwent octopamine treatment in colony 2 would produce greater amounts of food for their hive than those that underwent the treatment in colony 1. D - Bees that were the…

The slow block to polyspermy involves a permanent modification of the egg surface, usually through exocytosis of the cortical granules. In the 1970s, Dave Epel carried out experiments that led to the conclusion that a Ca2+ rise in the egg is both necessary and sufficient to trigger cortical granule exoctyosis (CGE). For the experiment below, describe it as correlation, loss-of-function or gain-of function. Then, indicate the predicted result.   Experiment (a) – Dr. Epel injects the egg with an indicator dye that fluoresces when Ca2+ binds to it. In unfertilized eggs, there is no fluorescence and no CGE. However, when sperm are added to the eggs, he observes fluorescence and then CGE.
