Which are the Symbols used in the pedigree analysis?
The following pedigree illustrates the inheritance of Tay-Sachs disease
in four generations of a family. Interpret the pedigree and determine
whether the trait is dominant or recessive. What happened in the third
generation?
A pedigree lists a father as the proband for a genetic disorder that he inherited from his mother. Out of his 3 children, his son inherits the condition but his two daughters do not. What can you hypothesize about this disorder?
a) It is an X-linked recessive disorder.
b) His wife is also a carrier of an affected X-chromosome, too.
c) His son had to inherit a defective X allele from his mother since he obviously received a Y from Dad.
d) Although his daughters inherited the father's mutant X allele, a wt X allele from their mother prevented them from inheriting the disorder.
e) All the answers could be correct.

- The pedigree pictured is of an extended family where a large percentage of family members develop colon cancer at an early age. In this family, individuals either get colon cancer before the age of 16, or they don’t get it at all. a) Based on the information you have been given, what evidence, if any, suggests an inherited contribution to the development of this disease? b) You take a medical history of all 33 people in the pedigree and discover that a large percentage drink a special coffee on a daily basis, while others do not. The individuals who do not drink coffee are I-1, II-2, II-4, II-9, III-7, III-13, IV-1, and IV-3. Could drinking this special coffee play a role in colon cancer? Four of the children (indicated by shaded shapes) are affected with a serious disease with an unknown genetic cause. a) For the disease, what pattern of inheritance (autosomal/sex-linked, recessive/dominant) is exhibited by this pedigree? b) Linkage analysis of the disease to a series of VNTR polymorphisms on human chromosome 5 is shown above.
