Concept explainers
To explain:
The possible ways by which epithelial cells are bound to one another and to the basement membrane.
Introduction:
The epithelial tissues are found on the body's outer surface and line the organs, vessels, and cavities. Epithelial cells constitute a thin cell layer known as the endothelium that adjoins the internal tissue lining of organ such as brain, lung, skin and heart. The cells are categorized by the number and structure of the cells on the surface. There are four epithelium tissues according to the number of cell layers- simple, stratified, and pseudo-stratified epithelium. There are three kinds of epithelium- squamous, cuboidal, and columnar epithelium on the basis of the shape of the epithelial cells.

- Describe the basic composition and structure of the plasma membrane. Discuss the contribution/function of each structure in the cell membrane, including phospholipids, cholesterol, peripheral proteins, transmembrane proteins, glycoproteins, glycolipids and actin filaments.arrow_forwardIntermediate filaments (IFs) function to provide mechanical strength to the cell and for internal organization of the cells. The intermediate filament _______________ plays a key role in connecting epithelial cells to the extracellular matrix. The IF binding protein________ plays key role in connecting the IFs in the nucleus with the cytoskeleton in the cytoplasm to help position the nucleus. keratin, SUN-domain protein SUN-domain proteins, lamin lamin, keratin SUN-domain proteins, keratin lamin, SUN-domain protein keratin, laminarrow_forwardWhich are the Three types of specialized membrane junctions?arrow_forward
- Together with their role in connecting the lateral membranes of adjacent epithelial cells, adherens junctions play a role in controlling cell shape. What associated intracellular structure and proteins are involved in this role?arrow_forwardIdentify the nonpolar, inorganic molecule which can pass freely through the plasma membrane.
