FRUIT COMPUTER COMPANY
Fruit Computer Company manufactures memory chips in batches of ten chips. From past experience, Fruit knows that 80% of all batches contain 10% (1 out of 10) defective chips, and 20% of all batches contain 50% (5 out of 10) defective chips. If a good (that is, 10% defective) batch of chips is sent to the next stage of production, processing costs of $4000 are incurred, and if a bad batch (50% defective) is sent on to the next stage of production, processing costs of $16000 are incurred. Fruit also has the alternative of reworking a batch at a cost of $4000. A reworked batch is sure to be a good batch. Alternatively, for a cost of $400, Fruit can test one chip from each batch in an attempt to determine whether the batch is defective.
QUESTIONS
1.Determine a strategy so Fruit can minimize the expected total cost per batch.
2.Compute the EVSI and EVPI.

In 2020, company A produces 3,200 drones, 3% of which were found to be defective and cannot pass the quality check. Company A employs 5 workers working an average of 8 hours a day in the drone production, and they worked 200 working days in 2020.In contrast, company B produces 900 drones, 10% of which were found to be defective and cannot pass the quality check. Company B employs 3 workers working an average of 6 hours a day in the drone production, and they worked 170 days in 2020.

- A large building may require an automated alarm system which monitors and controls all fire and security alarms in the building. Normally, the building is divided into zones and a number of alarms are associated with each zone. Alarms alert a central manned control area who may pass these on to the emergency services or may respond personally.Factors which have to be taken into account in building such a system are:Ø If the control area is unmanned and an alarm is activated this alarm should not be ignored if it is potentially serious. Emergency services should be automatically called.Ø Some but not all parts of the building may be equipped with sprinkler systems or systems to shut down electrical equipment. These should be activated if a fire alarm is confirmed. They should not be activated if there are people in the same room.Ø The building may be equipped with direction indicators which illuminate the route to the nearest exit. These should be activated when a fire alarm is…arrow_forwardA retail store sold in the month of April 5,000 products that produced $45,000 in sales. In the month of May the company sold 6,000 products. The store workforce consists of four full-time workers who work 40-hour week. In April the store also had seven part-time workers at 10 hours per week, and in May the store had nine part-timers at 15 hours per week (assume four weeks in each month). To address its problem with labor turnover, human resource officers at KAPC decide to run an experiment. Of their next 100 newly hired employees, 25 will randomly be selected to receive a housing voucher worth up to $4,000 per year to offset property taxes. To take advantage of this program, the employee must not only be randomly selected into the program but she must also purchase a home. Of the 25 employees selected into the housing voucher program, 7 leave KAPC within 12 months of starting. Of the 75 employees not selected into the program, 37 leave KAPC within 12 months of starting.a.
