Chapter 28, Problem 9TYK
Summary Introduction
Introduction:
The plant kingdom is divided into many phyla based on their structures, ability to live on land and other features. Ferns fall under the phylum monilophyta, and are represented by woody stems. The plants evolved to live on land by developing certain features, which helped them to conduct water and sugars. The early earth had plants that lived in water and had been mostly avascular. During the course of evolution, the vascular system developed and other parts also became modified.

- Many fungi are decomposers and degrade organic matter (such as wood and leaf litter). It has become clear that many of these decomposers are also able to colonize live plants as endophytes (living inside the plant without causing any harm) and allowing for prime access to plant tissues once the plant dies. Explain, using the principles of natural selection, how having the ability to be both a decomposer and endophyte evolved.
