Chapter 28, Problem 2TYK
Summary Introduction
Introduction:
The plants are multicellular organisms that fall under Eukaryota group of organisms. The early plants used to live underwater and during the course of evolution, they adopted a terrestrial life. The plants are the ultimate source of nutrition to all living organisms because they are able to perform photosynthesis and produce oxygen as a byproduct. The released oxygen is the main driving force for most of the organisms, including humans.

Which of the following was a challenge to the survival of the first land plants?
Select one or more:
O a. Desiccation (drying out)
O b. Transportation of water between tissues
O c. Shortage of carbon dioxide
d. Animal predation
O e. Too much sunlight (UV-radiation)
Some ancestral plants had a difficult transition to land, as challenges to survive caused plant evolution to develop very specialized adaptations over an extended amount of time. These are some
of the challenges that plants faced:
A. Avoiding desiccation
B. Supporting larger bodies (against gravity)
C Internally transporting substances
D. Keeping gametes wet
E. Keeping embryos wet
For each of the above challenges. provide a structure/adaptation that plants have developed which mitigates that specific challenge. Must describe a structure or trait for all!
Type of branching exhibited by the first ancestors of plants as observed in the fossils
A. Unequal branching
B. Dichotomous Branching
C. Multi-branching
D. B and C
E. None of the above
Plant adaptive structures for terrestrialization are as follows except:
A. Development of Anchoring mechanisms
B. Formation of transport mechanisms
C. Formation of a protective covering from desiccation
D. Formation of many tracheids and phloem
E. None of the above
