Chapter 26.4, Problem 1CSC
Does symmetry have a scent? In one study, researchers measured the body symmetry of 80 men and then issued a clean T-shirt to each one. Each subject wore his shirt to bed for two consecutive nights. A panel of 82 women sniffed the shirts and rated their scents for “pleasantness” and “sexiness.” Which shirts had the sexiest, most pleasant scents? The ones worn by the most symmetrical men. The researchers concluded that women can identify symmetrical men by their scent.
What other kinds of messages do animals send with pheromones and other signals? Find out just ahead, in Section 26.5.

Can parents distinguish their own children by smell alone?
To investigate, Porter and Moore (1981) gave new T-shirts to children of nine mothers. Each child wore his or her shirt to bed for three consecutive nights. During the day, the shirts were kept in individually sealed plastic bags. No scented soaps or perfumes were used during the study.
Each mother was given the shirt of her child and one shirt of another randomly chosen child. She was then asked to identify her own child’s shirt by smell. Eight of nine mothers identified their children correctly.
Answer the following questions using a two-sided test and a significance level of 0.05.
The Siamese cat pictured is called a “seal point” because it has seal-colored (dark brown) extremities. Some Siamese cats show the same color pattern, but the dark areas are of a lighter color or even a different shade—for example, lilac point, red point, blue point. What results would you predict if the experiments described in the text (shaving the cat and then increasing or decreasing temperature) were conducted on cats with these color patterns?
what is the evolutionary benefit for some mammals such as dogs that only see a small subset of the color spectrum?

- Part 1. Neuroscience of social behaviour The data in figure 1 below show the shoaling behaviour of wild-type zebrafish compared to a novel zebrafish mutant. Groups of sixteen fish were placed into a large rectangular tank and their behaviour was recorded for 5 minutes. Tracking software was used to estimate the nearest neighbour distance and inter-individual distance. The bar charts depict the mean and standard deviation (shown as an error bar). ** indicates a statistically significant difference individual differences. Q1. - 3 PTC Tasting: Complete this exercise with a partner. PTC (phenylthiocarbamide) is a bitter-tasting chemical found in some plants. Similar chemicals are found in broccoli and grapefruit. PTC is not found is human food, but if it was, it would be a powerful deterrent to eating that food. PTC tasting is a dominant trait. People who can taste PTC very strongly are called "supertasters". Most people (about 70% of most populations) are "tasters", but about 30% of any random group usually is made up of "non-tasters". For this experiment, let's assume that your genotype for this trait is Tt (heterozygous) We will assume that your partner's genotype is tt (homozygous recessive) Complete the following Punnett Square with your and your partner's genotypes for PTC tasting: $ 4 you partner t t % 5 T t t Oll 6 y & 7 O Probability (percentage) of having PTC-tasting child? - Why people with dark skin have less chances to develop skin cancer than people with lighter skin? (do not include preferred behavior in each group)arrow_forwardOnce there was a highly intelligent turkey that had nothing to do but reflect on the world's regularities. Morning always started out with the sky turning light, followed by the master's footsteps, which were always followed by the appearance of food. Other things varied, but food always followed footsteps. The sequence of events was so predictable that it eventually became the basis of turkey's theory that footsteps bring food. One morning, after more than 100 confirmations of this theory, the turkey listened for the master's footsteps, heard them, and had its head chopped off. Scientific theories can be revised upon the discovery of inconsistent evidence. Suggest how the turkey's theory might be modified so the remaining members of the flock would find it more useful for making predictions.arrow_forwardYou have discovered a new organism deep in the jungle. - Which of the following is an example of Open Kinematic Chain? CHoices: Squat Tumbling Push up Stretchingarrow_forwardNonearrow_forwardA study was done to see why crickets chirp and the reactions to stimulus that caused the audible sound to occur. Throughout the experiment they tested how a target (male) cricket interacts with different stimuli in the form of both male and female cricket. Their methods revolved around getting quantitive data on three separate behaviors that occurred in the target male: locomotion(any time the target did a continuous movement), contact(counted when the target touched a stimulus with any part of its body), and chirping(audible, chirp sound with leg or wing movement from the target). The target was rotated each test, so each data point came from a different cricket with the female stimulus, being the same each time, and their previous target becoming the male stimulus. They would place the two male crickets in the target bin and let them acclimate for two minutes before they began collecting data from the target for three minutes. Then the female stimulus was placed in the bin and left…arrow_forward
