Why does sound travel faster in solids and liquids than in gases?
The reason of speed of sound is faster in solids and liquids than in gases.
Answer to Problem 9A
As the molecules are closest in the solid and rarest in case of gases. The speed of sound travel by the vibration so as the molecules are closest in the solids, so the speed of sound in faster in solids & slowest in the gases.
Explanation of Solution
Introduction: The sound is a wave which ravel through material medium.
The speed of sound in the steel is more than liquid and gases as in the solid there is very less space between particles. The speed of sound in liquid is more than the air, as in liquid the molecules are closer than the air. Thus, the speed of sound is faster in the solids & liquids than in gases.
Conclusion:
As the solids & liquids are closely spaced so the speed of sound is faster than in gases.
