Concept explainers
Is it possible for one sound wave to cancel another? Explain.
Whether it is possible or not for one sound wave to cancel another.
Explanation of Solution
Introduction:
Like any other waves, the sound waves can also be made to interfere. In case of sound waves, the crest of the wave can be considered as the compression while the trough of the wave can be taken as the rarefaction.
When the crest or trough of one wave overlaps the crest or trough of another wave, then the interference so produced will be constructive. In case of destructive interference, the crest of one wave overlaps with the trough of another wave. Also, in case of destructive interference, the listener can hear a lower sound or sometimes no sound at all.
Conclusion:
Hence, it is possible for a sound wave to cancel one another due to destructive interference.
