Chapter 25, Problem 2ITD
Summary Introduction

To review:

The modern levels of carbon dioxide and oxygen, as compared to the levels when they first came to exist.

Introduction:

The formation of Earth took place around 4.6 billion years ago. The asteroid impacts were at a peak after the earth’s formation but then started decreasing subsequently. The asteroid impacts ceased to be of consequence around 3.7 billion ago. As the asteroid impact decreased, the level of oxygen (O2) started increasing. The decrease in the impact of asteroid played a crucial role in the origin of life. The plausibility of life increased when the impact of asteroid diminished.

Scientist have determined that the early Earth had no free oxygen anywhere. Briefly explain what evidence in the rock layers that scientists found to prove when the early conditions on earth had free oxygen in the atmosphere.
The Miller-Urey experiment simulated compounds present in the atmosphere of early Earth, lightning, and the evaporation and condensation of atmospheric water. What other information about the conditions on Earth during this time period would you want to know to improve the experiment
Around the time Eukaryotic Cells began to compartmentalize their reactions, and the chloroplast and mitochondria evolved, the atmosphere went through a shift in composition. A new deadly gas became more and more prominent, which likely caused a mass extinction for those organisms that couldn't adapt to its toxicity. The gas was: Nitrogen Sulfuric Acid Oxygen Methane
