Explanation of Solution

The terms D and L are used to determine the specific rotation of monosaccharides.  The letter D stands for dextrorotation and L stands for levorotation.

In D-monosaccharides, the –OH group at the penultimate carbon is located on right side of the carbon.  In L-monosaccharides, the –OH group is located on left side of the carbon.
