Concept Introduction:

The keto-group of carbonyl compound is in equilibrium with the enol form which contains alcohol group.  The two groups are in equilibrium with each other and the enol form contains a double bonded carbon atoms adjacent to the alcohol group.  The keto and enol compounds are said to be Tautomers and the mechanism is known as keto-enol tautomerization.
