Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The three compounds which are classified as ketone bodies, the process in the body which produces them should be determined. The other questions related to them such as why are they so designated and why do they form also should be answered rightfully.

Concept introduction:

The breakdown of fatty acid is done by $\text{β-oxidation}$ process.

$\text{β-oxidation}$ is the oxidation and splitting of two carbon units at $\text{β}$- carbon atom. This results in sequential removal of 2 carbon fragments as acetyl CoA until the complete oxidation of fatty acids.

Ketogenesis is a process by which acetyl CoA is converted into ketone bodies.

Ketone bodies are metabolic products that are produced in excess during excessive breakdown of fatty acids. They are water soluble and energy yielding. In a normal man, concentration of ketone bodies in the blood is usually less than $3mg/100mL$

Acetoacetate, acetone and $\text{β-hydroxybutyrate}$  are collectively known as ketone bodies.
