Concept explainers
(a)
To explain: The effect of increasing the slit width for diffraction.
(a)
Answer to Problem 17Q
The diffraction will be decreased.
Explanation of Solution
Introduction: The pattern resulting from superimposing of two waves is known as interference. Interference can be destructive or constructive.
Destructive interference occurs after the crest of a wave overlaps the trough of another wave. The waves destructively interfere and also, cancel each other, once crest of one & trough of other interfere.
The diffraction is inversely propositional to the width of slit. When a student increases slit width in single-slit diffraction experiment then the spacing of fringes will be decrease.
(b)
To explain: The effect of increasing the slit wavelength for diffraction.
