Concept introduction: The hydrocarbons which have a general formula CnH2n+2 are known as Alkanes. Alkanes can be substituted or unsubstituted, when carbon atom is substituted alkanes are known as substituted alkanes or branched alkanes. In formula, n is the  total number of carbon atoms present in molecule. For example if n is equal to 2 than molecular formula will be C2H6 .
