Chapter 23, Problem 106IL
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation: The structures of the two compounds obtained by hydrolysis followed by acedification of vitamin B-5 should be drawn.

Concept introduction:

Amide Hydrolysis: In presence of base or acid with continuous heating, amide reacts with water to form the corresponding amine and carboxylic acid.

  • Salt of carboxylic acid and amine are obtained when amide hydrolysis takes place in presence of base.

The salt of carboxylic acid is further treated with an aqueous solution of mineral acid (HCl) to get a carboxylic acid.

An unknown substance is found to contain only carbon and hydrogen. It is a liquid that boils at 49 °C at 1 atm pressure. Upon analysis it is found to contain 85.7% carbonand 14.3% hydrogen by mass. At 100 °C and 735 torr, the vapor of this unknown has a density of 2.21 g/L. When it is dissolved in hexane solution and bromine water is added, no reaction occurs. What is the identity of the unknown compound?
