Chapter 22, Problem 59PP
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation: Conjugate base of pyrrole and its relatively high acidity has to be discussed using the concept of resonance.

Concept Introduction:

Resonance is a mental exercise and method within the Valence Bond Theory of bonding that describes the delocalization of electrons within molecules.  The net sum of valid resonance structures is defined as a resonance hybrid, which represents the overall delocalization of electrons within the molecule.  A molecule that has several resonance structures is more stable than one with fewer.  Some resonance structures are more favorable than others.

Conjugate acids and bases are acids and bases that differ only in the presence or absence of a hydrogen ion. In acid base equilibrium both the forward and backward reaction involve proton transfer. After donating a hydrogen ion, the acid in the forward reaction becomes the base in the reverse reaction. A strong acid or base has a weak conjugate and vice versa.
