Chapter 22, Problem 3DAA
Summary Introduction
To determine: Whether the experimental study support the hypothesis that insects and mites aid moss fertilization.
Concept introduction:
Mosses are flowerless, non-vascular, seedless plants that reproduce using spores and have gametophyte-dominant life cycle. The spores are dispersed through water for fertilization. The sperms swim through water to reach egg. Sometimes in search of food, small insects inadvertently transport the sperm from one plant to egg of another plant.

Kalanchoe is the direct production of plantlets on the tips or edges of the leaves. Leaves that act as reproductive agents are almost always thick enough to store water. Is this reproduction sexual or asexual?
A plant biologist discovers a new species of plant in the ashes of a recent forest fire along the sides of a steep mountain range. It is fall, and temperatures are dropping below freezing. The biologist cannot stay in the field to observe the plant. What can he infer about the plants reproductive strategy based on his recent observations?
A) the plant will produce flowers because at this altitude there is sufficient sunlight
B) the plant will produce comes because cones will mature into adult plants more rapidly
C) the plant will produce cones because cones allow for seed dispersal through all seasons
D) the plant will produce flowers because flowers can protect the seed from extreme conditions
You are studying a type of plant known as " rockcress" or Arabidopsis sp. You discover a mutant in which the central cell of the female gametophyte cannot be fertilized. What structure will not form in these mutant plants?

However, if the plant has not been pollinated previously, self-pollination can occur. However, if cross pollination occurs after self-pollination takes place, the pollen from cross pollination reaches the style before the pollen from self-pollination. How would this affect the plant reproductive strategy why would this increase diversity in the plants offspring?arrow_forwardDuring double fertilization, one sperm will unite with the egg, forming a zygote. As mentioned in the lecture, a generative cell divides to form two sperm. How is the second sperm used during the process of double fertilization? 00 00 It fertilizes the flower by landing directly on the stigma, which is the sticky surface found above a flower's style and ovary. This depends on the type of plant. Land plants will allocate the sperm that is not united with the egg to the formation of different tissues through mitosis and cytokinesis. It forms a triploid cell by fusing with polar nuclei. This cell then divides and develops endosperm tissue. Since it was not the sperm to fuse with the polar nuclei, the sperm cell will degenerate.arrow_forward
- Seeds and pollen grains are key adaptations for life on land. These adaptations relate to reproductive success and survival advantages. The following questions require you to explain some of these adaptations. A. Contrast sperm delivery in seedless plants with sperm delivery in seed plants. (5-6 sentence) B. - Which of the following comparisons between the moss life cycle and fern life cycle are correct? A) Mosses have flagellated sperm that need water to reach the female gamete, while the sperm of ferns are unflagellated and are not dependent on water.B) The sporophyte generation is smaller than the gametophyte generation in mosses, but the sporophyte generation is much larger than the gametophyte generation in ferns.C) The spores are produced in capsules on stalks in mosses but in small structures called sori on the underside of leaves in ferns.D) The gametes are produced in gametangia in mosses but in specialized structures on the underside of leaves in ferns.E) Both kinds of plants depend on wind for dispersal of spores.arrow_forwardA team of researchers investigated the effects of phosphorous availability and light intensity on an angiosperm species. Seeds of the angiosperm were divided into four equal groups. Groups 1 and 2 were exposed to 200 μmol, and Groups 3 and 4 were exposed to 500 μmol. Groups 2 and 4 also received a phosphorous (P) solution. After 20 days, all plants were weighed, and the average dry weight of each group was calculated. The results are in the table below. Group 1(200 μmol, no P) Group 2(200 μmol, + P) Group 3 (500 μmol, no P) Group 4 (500 μmol + P) Average Dry weight (g) 0.8 1.1 1.5 6.2 Describe the effects of light and phosphorous on the growth of the plants in this study.
