In chromatography, bonded phase is a stationary phase that is covalently bonded to silanol groups on the silica surface. Bonded phase is very common in liquid chromatography. The basic structure of bonded phase begins with a silicon atom on silica surface is as follows:
Here R group determines the polarity of the bonded phase. If R group is polar, then the bonded phase is said to be polar bonded phase and if the R group is non-polar, then the bonded phase is said to be non-polar.
