How the brain regulates its blood flow and what chemical stimulus is the most potent in activating its regulatory mechanisms.

Introduction:

When compared to other organs, the brain receives less blood (of the overall blood flow), around 700 ml/min at rest. Even though the less amount of blood is received by the brain, that less volume of blood is important as it has more reliability. If blood is cut off from the brain, within few seconds it leads to oxygen deprivation and loss of consciousness occurs. This causes a major damage if the brain is not re-supplied with oxygen within five minutes (anoxia).
