BIOPredict/Calculate Cell Membranes The membrane of a living cell can be approximated by a parallel-plate capacitor with plates of area 4.75 × 10-9 m2, a plate separation of 8.5 × 10-9 m, and a dielectric with a dielectric constant of 4.5. (a) What is the energy stored in such a cell membrane if the potential difference across it is 0.0725 V? (b) Would your answer to part (a) increase, decrease, or stay the same if the thickness of the cell membrane is increased? Explain.

- Earth can be considered as a spherical capacitor with two plates, where the negative plate is the surface of Earth and the positive plate is the bottom of the ionosphere, which is located at an altitude of approximately 70 km. The potential difference between Earth’s surface and the ionosphere is about 350,000 V. (a) Calculate the capacitance of this system, (b) Find the total charge on this capacitor, (c) Find the energy stored in this system.arrow_forwardA parallel-plate capacitor has plates of area A = 7.00 102 m2 separated by distance d = 2.00 104 m. (a) Calculate the capacitance if the space between the plates is filled with air. What is the capacitance if the space is filled half with air and half with a dielectric of constant = 3.70 as in (b) Figure P16.56a, and (c) Figure P16.56b? (Hint: In (b) and (c), one of the capacitors is a parallel combination and the other is a series combination.) Figure P16.56arrow_forwardElectronic flash units for cameras contain a capacitor for storing the energy used to produce the flash. In one such unit the flash lasts for 1/675 fraction of a second with an average light power output of 270 kW. (a) If the conversion of electrical energy to light is 95% efficient (because the rest of the energy goes to thermal energy), how much energy must be stored in the capacitor for one flash? (b) The capacitor has a potential difference between its plates of 125 V when the stored energy equals the value stored in part (a). What is the capacitance?arrow_forward
- The dielectric to be used in a parallel-plate capacitor has a dielectric constant of 3.60 and a dielectric strength of 1.60107 V/m. The capacitor has to have a capacitance of 1.25 nF and must be able to withstand a maximum potential difference 5.5 kV. What is the minimum area the plates of the capacitor may have?arrow_forwardReview. A storm cloud and the ground represent the plates of a capacitor. During a storm, the capacitor has a potential difference of 1.00 x 108 V between its plates and a charge of 50.0 C. A lightning strike delivers 1.00% of the energy of the capacitor to a tree on the ground. How much sap in the tree can be boiled away? Model the sap as water initially at 30.0C. Water has a specific heat of 4 186 J/kg C, a boiling point of 100C, and a latent heat of vaporization of 2.26 X 106 J/kg.arrow_forwardA capacitor is constructed from two square, metallic plates of sides and separation d. Charges +Q and Q are placed on the plates, and the power supply is then removed. A material of dielectric constant K is inserted a distance x into the capacitor as shown in Figure P20.85. Assume d is much smaller than x. (a) Find the equivalent capacitance of the device. (b) Calculate the energy stored in the capacitor. (c) Find the direction and magnitude of the force exerted by the plates on the dielectric. (d) Obtain a numerical value for the force when x = /2, assuming = 5.00 cm, d = 2.00 mm, the dielectric is glass ( = 4.50), and the capacitor was charged to 2.00 103 V before the dielectric was inserted. Suggestion: The system can be considered as two capacitors connected in parallel. Figure P20.85arrow_forward
- A parallel-plate capacitor with capacitance C0 stores charge of magnitude Q0 on plates of area A0 separated by distance d0. The potential difference across the plates is V0. If the capacitor is attached to a battery and the charge is doubled to 2Q0, what are the ratios (a) Cnew/C0 and (b) Vnew/V0? A second capacitor is identical to the first capacitor except the plate area is doubled to 2A0. If given a charge of Q0, what are the ratios (c) Cnew/C0 and (d) Vnew/V0? A third capacitor is identical to the first capacitor, except the distance between the plates is doubled to 2d0. If the third capacitor is then given a charge of Q0, what are the ratios (e) Cnew/C0 and (f) Vnew/V0?arrow_forwardA long thin wire is used in laser printers to charge the photoreceptor before exposure to light. This is done by applying a large potential difference between the wire and the photoreceptor. a. Use Equation 26.23, V(r)=20lnRr to determine a relationship between the electric potential V and the magnitude of the electric field E at a distance r from the center of the wire of radius R (r R). b. Determine the electric potential at a distance of 2.0 mm from the surface of a wire of radius R = 0.80 mm that will produce an electric field of 1.8 106 V/m at that point.arrow_forwardConsider two different capacitors, A and B. Figure 27.8 shows a graph of the potential difference V between the two plates of each capacitor versus the charge Q on the plates. Use these graphs to find the capacitance of each capacitor. - A parallel-plate capacitor is connected to a battery. What happens to the stored energy if the plate separation is doubled while the capacitor remains connected to the battery? (a) It remains the same, (b) It is doubled. (c) It decreases by a factor of 2. (d) It decreases by a factor of 4. (e) It increases by a factor of 4.arrow_forwardAn air-filled parallel-plate capacitor with capacitance C0 stores charge Q on plates separated by distance d. The potential difference across the plates is V0 and the energy stored is PEC,0. If the capacitor is disconnected from its voltage source and the space between the plates is then filled with a dielectric of constant = 2.00, evaluate the ratios (a) Cnew/C0, (b) Vnew/V0, and (c) PEC,new/PEC,0.arrow_forwardTwo Leyden jars are similar in size and shape, but one has glass as the dielectric and the other ebonite. The glass jar is charged, but when the charge is shared between the two jars (connected in parallel), the electric potential drops by 40% of its initial value.
