Electronegativity: The chemical behavior of an atom where it attracts the shared electron pair to itself.
If hydrogen atoms in a compound are replaced by electronegative atoms, it causes inductive electron withdrawal. It stabilizes its conjugate base thus increases the strength of the acid.

- Some weak acids and their pKa values are given below. Which one of these acids will have the STRONGEST conjugate base? Select one: a. Phenol; pKa = 10.00 b. Methanoic acid; pKa = 3.75 c. Bromoethanoic acid; pKa = 2.9 d. Methanol; pKa = 15.54arrow_forward6 Explain how this is correctarrow_forwardPlease see attached imagearrow_forward
- What is the Ka for each compound? Use a calculator when necessary.arrow_forwardPut the following compounds in order from weakest acid to strongest acid. Explain (pKa values are not enough and trends should be considered).arrow_forwardHello! Can someone please help me with this question?arrow_forward
- What is the conjugate base of HS-1? Select one: a. S-2 b. H2S c. H3S+1 d. H2Oarrow_forwardUsing the table of pKa values given in Appendix I, answer the following: a. Which is the most acidic organic compound in the table? b. Which is the least acidic organic compound in the table? c. Which is the most acidic carboxylic acid in the table? d. Which is more electronegative: an sp3 oxygen or an sp2 oxygen? (Hint: Pick a compound in Appendix I with a hydrogen attached to an sp2 oxygen and one with a hydrogen attached to an sp3 oxygen and compare their pKa values.) e. Which compounds demonstrate that the relative electronegativities of a hybridized nitrogen atom are sp 7 sp2 7 sp3?arrow_forward7. Determine the K₁ of each of the following. a. A 0.00475 M solution of acid HY has a pH of 2.68. What is the Ka of HY? b. CICH₂COOH has a pKa of 2.87, what is the Ka of the acid? c. A base has a pKb of 5.14, what is the Ka of the conjugate acid? d. A 0.25 M solution of a weak acid is 3% dissociated, what is the Ka of the acid?arrow_forward
- An acid has a Ka = 7.77 x 10-4. Is it stronger or weaker than an acid with Ką = 7.77 x 10-3 ? A. stronger B. weaker C. the samearrow_forwardMatch the carboxylic acids CH3CH2COOH, CCl3COOH, and ICH2COOH to their approximate pka values.arrow_forwardWhich statement correctly describes Ka, pKa and the strength of a weak organic acid? The larger the K₁, the larger the pKa, the stronger the acid. The larger the Ka, the smaller the pKa, the stronger the acid. The smaller the Ka, the larger the pKa, the stronger the acid. The smaller the Ka, the smaller the pKa, the stronger the acid. Iarrow_forward
